For diarrhea, a qava (tea) of daalcheeni (cinnamon) and bari alaichi is brilliant. My kid has it today so I am giving him a spoon of iron syrup. Iron causes constipation in my child and in me. Yours may be different. We need to keep them hydrated with ORS, watch for dehydration signs (crying without tears, less wet diapers) and take to emergency room for IV infusion if god forbid things get to dehydration point.
I would.justlike to add… a mobile kid will get sick. It’s better you accept this fact so that when it happens… It’s not a big deal.
My son got sick after all the precautions I took and he stayed sick until we got bk and well on after too.
My daughter didn’t cuz she was.a 2 month old ..that coukdnt go anywhere, touch anything nor eat anything.
Here.is to hoping the trip goes smoothly… But if he gets sick… It’s ok. Just relax and.let the drs there.deal with it. If push comes to.shove… U can always come bk early
what khawa said.. kids can and kids will get sick.. heck even we adults do and I was born and raised there.. our body here gets used to these additives, preservaties, etc whatever they put in everything and natural things make us sick in Pakistan
Just take care of yourself and the kid and I hate to say it but if possible, make sure you find out about a good pediatrician/hospital from family and friends just so you are prepared and dont end up with one of those no name docs/hospitals that will serve you no good.
CB when r u going? Ill be leaving in the first week of nov and will be visiting lhr in 2nd week of nov.
Dem will the buggs be down by mid nov?
And ya nappies are big issues. I hate gel ones. If its pamper 1500 for 60 pcs so i think its better to take from here as price wise its the same.
My whole family is docs so im not much worried about infections and getting sick there.
Can we get special milk free and gluten free baby cerelac and formula from some good store in Islamabad or lahore?
Dem can you check for me with some pharmacy or any store from where you get yours.
My baby is allergic to milk and wheat.
heydou, give me a name of milk and I can check al fateh and HKB for u.
And yes bugs are already down.
CB, it is cotton I think. I don’t see a gel layer. And mirage told me abt the pampers too but honestly, only the pack she gets is imported quality, all the others are very low quality and leak. And I don’t want to waste 1500 by buying the wrong pack and u only know it is wrong when u tear it open and render it unreturnable :P.
I have been using canbebe from the beginning and I never had any issues, no leaks, no rashes, no discomfort. I tried all other brands in beginning and this IMO is the best of the lot.
^ depends on size. but the largest pack in any size ranging from 60+ diapers in size 3 (weight 4-9kg) to 40+ diapers in size 4 (weight -14kg) is around 1200 PKR
If there is one thing i would take with me… Its formula for special needs kid.
My daughter was on hypoallergenic milk and i went theough hell teying to find enfamil in karachi. Hypoallergenic kind. Finally i eas able to find in a diff brand but it was too thick. How i spent 3 weeks with milk issues is undescribable.
Generally formulas vary country to xountry. In texture and in taste…even if they are the exact same brand.
I realized this with nan denmark and nan arabia. The milk in a
Arabia was yellower and thicker. An uncle of mine works in the formula industry and he said formulas are tweaked to suit babies demographically. Babies in europe, are raised on perfentage milk, even full fat being only 3.5%. They need lighter milk.
In arabia full milk is 100%. The formulas are usually thicker. Just a bit.
So if you have a picky baby … Take formula with you!
Its the same thing we find in chocolate. I hate twix mars snickers etc you find in pak… They taste horrible. The texture the taste… Eww.
Hi CB, I went to lahore when my munchkin was 12 weeks old. my advice would be:
Take enough formula from here to last the trip I took an extra can!
I bought Nestle mineral water (got it from Makro and got it in outers of 6 so they were all cellophane wrapped as well as properly sealed) and boiled it for all feeds- also used it to sterilise bottles and everything infact!! I took a cheap kettle from here (£5 from Sainsburys!) and kept it in my room- so I could boil water whenever i needed, cos the electricity kept going off at unpredictable times so the min it came back i boiled water and kept it in a thermos to keep it warm- also kept some in a jug to cool at room temp- obvously if you have a generator you wont have that issue but we didn’t. i would recommend a kettle anyway just for your use.
Take plenty of calpol, nappy rash cream (just in case), vapour rub, nasal drops, dioralyte and at 9 months that is about it.
I took pampers from here to last the trip- from my niece and nephews experience- when we bought pampers in lahore they weren;t as good and the kiddies ended up with really bad nappy rash!! Also take plenty of wipes from here- again they are readily available in pak but quality is different and they cost more than here!!!
for sterilising bottles i took Boots sterilising tablets as well as Oasis disposable sterilising bags (the sterilised water lasts up to 24 hours in the bag)
But i did end up just boiling the bottles and airdrying most days
With regards to mosquitos and Dengue I bought Arnywear large fabric - its a large piece of fabric which protects against lots of insects- Boots used to stock it but don’t anymore but you can get it online from amazon/ebay or direct from: Landing Page. it cost approx £19.99
This was my best buy ever for the trip!!! I used to wrap my little one in it if we went out in the evening- the one time he got bitten was when
he wasn’t wrapped in it- at night i used to spread it over the bed (it was double bed size) and we all slept on top of it. no midgies came near us-
it is entirely safe for children and those with sensitive skin as it contains naturally occurring insect repellant- no chemicals. Don’t get the black one as for some reason (according to my sis-in law) that wasn’t as effective as the other colours. i had the khaki, blue and pink and all worked fantastically. they come in different sizes and colours- have a look at the website. we ended up leaving them there at the end of our trip and our family there want more!
Other family and friends have since taken them to pakistan and all swear by them- noone has been bitten.
I also took a mosquito net from here got it from boots but didn’t end up using it.
I would recommend a large thermos flask to keep boiled water hot.
I also took a small pack hand washing powder for my little one from here just because he had sensitive skin at the time (thankfully he’s grown out of that now) and didn’t want to risk any skin flare ups due to washing powder.
Someone has already mentioned warm clothes- it feels colder in pakistan as they aren’t as equipped as us up in the north of england to deal with cold weather!!
Thanks Saheli for the awesome share of information. I particularly read up on arny wear with interest. it looks good .. is it like a regular cloth? i am thinking of getting a medium piece and turning it into a little robe for baby .. so he can wear it all day long …
i am really scared of dengue , place i am going to already three members are suffering from it .. i dont want baby to suffer either .. so arnywear seems like a good protection ..
Hi CB. yes the arny wear is a like regular fabric- kind of like very soft cotton. feels very nice.
probably a good idea to make something out of it to wear permanently for your little man- i just bought it on the off chance it would work and was very impressed.
you can wash it as normal and its protection lasts about a year, you need to scrunch it up to ‘activate’ it- it has a slight fragrance (was quite nice) and when that fades you just scrunch it up again. its not the type of material that creases though!
I just got the large one- and used it around my baby in his pram or to wrap him in it in the evening but he was much younger than your little on so keeping it on him wasn’t an issue.
i would recommend getting a large one to spread over the bed to protect you all at night. and just so you have one as well.
We had a hand-carry and a backpack for our son. Backpack had 3 diapers, a small container with wipes, an extra outfit, 2 bottles, 2 water sippy/straw cups, nido, cerelac, couple small books, 1 small toy. The hand carry had extra diapers, we took around 20 diapers but only used around 6-7 I suppose. I also had a big container of wipes, extra clothes (4 pairs), comfy sandals slippers, extra books and small toys, and plastic/grocery bags, sheets/thin blanket. We refilled the backpack as needed.
Couple days before, I had ordered children’s meal for my son with the airline, however, he was mostly sleep and we ended up finishing it, He basically drank his milk throughout the trip. However, it is good to have that option available.
