Assume I'm a complete idiot...

Re: Assume I’m a complete idiot…

since the husband is going too,so I consider that a big help.
I am planning on taking her light weight umbrella stroller.I have ‘heard’ that this airline lets you have the stroller during transit, unlike PIA which did not and the stroller was returned at the time of baggage claim at the final destination.
I think this is the right time to bribe the husband to get me the Ipad…muahhahahah…I am also assuming Dora and Mickey mouse will be available on the plane.I asked my sister who just got back from her trip, she said she did not check the cartoon selection.Makes sense…!!
Yes please do pack some rash cream and as Ira said her infant tylenol/motrin etc.
Wipes are a good thing to carry.they are so multi purpose for long trips.
Regarding milk…I am not sure how she will like the taste of Enfagrow after she has been on regular milk, but I am not too keen on giving her fresh milk there.I still need to figure this one out.How does Nido taste…???..I have never tasted it.I was thinking of carrying the tetra packs with me but I am not sure if our luggae will allow that.If it does,I am for sure taking them.I am actually looking at this as an opportunity to maybe try to take her off the bottle. She is just fond of her bedtime bottle feed and that is an issue. If yu want to switch your daughter to those cartons.maybe try a few weeks before traveling and see how she likes it and how her tummy behaves with it.Although at this age they usually do well with different food items but better be safe than sorry, especially when you are traveling.

I traveled from JFK NY last year and they let you carry baby food items etc (this is my experience, might differ from others’).I am thinking of taking lil bit of her favorite food items onboard to avoid plane food.Plane food has made me sick so I want to avoid it.

Another question…if I ask for it can I get fresh whole milk on the plane…??Just curious and wondering if on our way there,it should be suitable…??

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

Thanks.Although I am again posting this as a second post...:p

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

Okay, I think I'll call the airline tomorrow. Questions to ask:

  1. Can I carry a stroller onboard that we can have back during transit?

  2. Will you be able to supply us with milk during the flight?

  3. What food/liquid items can I bring onboard? Are there any restrictions?

  4. What are the meals like, and are they the same as adult passengers?

  5. On the plane can I refrigerate food items I bring along for the baby? Will you be able to heat them?

...anything else?

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

I have a few tried and tested tips for taking a toddler to karachi which you may find helpful. My older sister took her 1 and half yr old son to karachi last year same time to attend my wedding so she has relevant experience. If you can, take bottled water with you, because you can never be sure of the bottled water you get over there, I've heard too many horror stories of bottled pani turning out to be nalke ka pani. if you can't take enough water, then get only nestle from bigger more renown stores like Agha's supermarket etc . for milk, my sister took powdered nido milk cans from here, but I'm sure the pakistani brand ones are just as good.
also, keep your child in your sight at ALL times i cannot emphasize that enough. I don't think it's a good idea to hire a maid, new maids can turn out to be very unreliable and careless. never hire someone without tons of references, and I'm assuming you won't have time to look for one either. If the family you are staying with has a reliable maid, you could arrange for them to look after your baby during the wedding, thats what we did for my nephew at my wedding. our local handy man ( whom we've known for more than 35 years) was assigned the task of looking after my nephew who kept running around with other kids. the hall was so big, he could have easily gotten lost, so it was a relief to know that he was in safe hands. the same handy man had taken care of me 25 years ago at my phoopis wedding and my older sister too at some other wedding 3 decades ago :) . and if you still feel worried at any time during the trip , just keep reciting "ya hafiz" , Inshallah everything will go well.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

^Thank you tranquil. About the water, my mumani also suggested buying the Nestle bottles in larger sealed crates and not individual bottles. The larger crates are more difficult to tamper with.

So did your sis just add bottled water to the milk?

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

@sahar, Yes she did, and she actually gave him nido milk (bottled water +powdered nido) for a few days before leaving , just to see if the baby liked it. so that might be a good idea for you to try too.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

^Yeah, I'm weaning her off the bottle (she has 3 servings of milk per day, and this past week I've replaced 1 with the sippy cup -- tomorrow we replace another!). Once she is more comfortable with the sippy cup, I'll try offering her the powdered or shelf stable milk.

When my mumanis went their kids developed rashes and they had never had problems before. I think the diapers are made differently there. Not sure why. If I have space, I will take as many as I can.

*Hmm may be but I have found pampers to be the best ! in many stores in clifton & defence you will find imported diaper brands and they are not locally made so I really don't think you need to worry about it if I were you I would not carry so much weight of diapers with me. *

So the EnfaGrow is regular whole milk? They are only available in powder form? Also, is Nestle water fine? I keep hearing muxed things. Was planning to take as many bottles as we can manage, but the weight limitations are gonna be tough.

*Nestle mineral water is good and water bottles they are easily available and are very safe and clean. Enfa Grow is not regular whole milk it's a formula for toddlers from 1 to 3 years.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

my tip will be just take it easy. i recently travelled with my toddler and her elder sibling(7 yrs) all alone to pak and the back home. it was 22 hr long journey both ways and i was so nervous. they fight a lot and r restless kids but seriously everything was ok. its just the fear. my toddler wasn't potty trained and was on bottle. but i left her bottle behind. once i was there i took her diapers away too. she got potty trained in pak and we got rid of that bottle too. hehe

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

Questions and answers from the airline:
**
1. Can I carry a stroller onboard that we can have back during transit?**
You can bring the stroller to the gate. They will tag and stow it. I asked if I could have it during transit, and though I can request that, they do have strollers available at the transit location, so I don't technically need that one. But I may insist on it anyway, cuz she will be more comfortable in that one. They did ask if it is an "umbrella" stroller. I think technically the Citi Mini by Baby Jogger calls itself umbrella, but it is bigger than the typical ones. I wonder if they'll allow. I hope they do!
**
2. Will you be able to supply us with milk during the flight?**
Yes.

3. What food/liquid items can I bring onboard? Are there any restrictions?
No restrictions on food for baby/child.

*4. What are the meals like, and are they the same as adult passengers? *
You can request a child's meal beforehand. I think they give stuff like burgers and nuggets. I'm not sure I should do that, given that she seems to prefer typical adult desi-style food. The adult meals are probably going to be more popular.

5. On the plane can I refrigerate food items I bring along for the baby? Will you be able to heat them?
Yes, they will refrigerate as long as there is space. I forgot to ask about heating.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

everyone has offered great advice and tips......here are my two cents....

  • if you need food warmed....ask them well in advance of the meal serving times as they will find it a great inconvenience if you ask them to warm stuff while they are trying to serve 200 hungry people with serving carts blocking the walkways.

  • if you think that you will be needing two changes of clothes for the duration of the trip then take 4. nobody plans for delays or layovers that turn into over-night stays. you can never have enough clothing for kids.

  • take diapers.....it has been several years now but I recall that I was permitted to take as many diaper boxes as i wanted free of charge. I simply consolidated a few large cartons into one big box, added a few containers of wipes and had the package shrink wrapped. It was checked in along with the luggage at no additional cost. when I did use diapers purchased locally in Karachi my toddler developed a rash.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

^ they allowed you to carry diapers for free? which airline is that?

sahar.. are you travelling by pia?

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

qatar

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

^ Sahar thank you for posting this and information you got from the airline. I might be traveling in march to pakistan with my little one. he will be 7 months by thn. So i have been wondering abt the food and stuff as well.
Hope you have a nice trip.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

qatar is quite nice. they even give toys and colouring kits to crying kids. my kids got sponge bob and they were really happy. also if u have stay at Doha airport they have this really nice play area. it was a life saver. mostly their staff is very helpful.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

I believe that it was a code share between Air Canada and Etihaad.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

That's good to know!

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

Sahar thanks for posting the info you got from the airline. It seems it is more or less the same with most of them.
Regarding the stroller, last year when I traveled from NY to Lahore by PIA,they let you take it to the plane and then take it away. They say it goes 'down' with the rest of the luggage and you do not get it during transit (not sure how this varies with different airlines and airports). When boarding from Lahore on my way back I had a layover at Manchester and really wanted to have a stroller (my daughter was 9 mo at that time).I was told I can request one at Manchester airport.I did,and all I got was some angry Pakistani uncle telling me that the stroller is 'neechay chalee gayee...neechay challee gayee'...and plainly refused that there was no such thing as complimentary stroller there....:(
That was the worst travel experience in my life and I just assume now there will be no stroller anywhere.I really hope the info you got is accurate and they really can get you one at the transit airport. But for sure carry a light weight stroller.I bought a $35 umbrella stroller. It worked for me great in Pakistan too and I am planning on taking it this time too.

Re: Assume I'm a complete idiot...

^qatar gives u complimentary stroller. they hav special strollers with their airline logo on them. but u do need to walk to their counter.
