Re: Assemblies to be dissolved after presidential election
I don't think so. Judge Chaudry wasn't doing his job, so he was taken out of it. The situation went up into flames becuase Judge Chaudry, being a Judge, didn't do things according to the law in Pakistan. He could have registered a case against the government and done things through the proper route. And next thing you know the entire country went up in flames.
Now Musharraf giving MQM license to work in Karachi and rule it and run their gunda-gardi there IS a bad decision, and he should know better than that. But the way I see it, is he's using the MQM right now to fight off other trouble-makers.
He's a good visionary. Just doesn't think all the time about repercussions. This isn't the first time he tried to saccrifice something in the vision of greater good for all. He's a utilitarian, and that sometimes goes against the interests of a subset of Pakistani citizens.
PC, The chief justice WAS doing his job... The privitization of Pak Steel is a good example. The deal was full of holes, and they were selling it far below its value. The CJ stepped in and stopped the process... The case of KESC in Karachi is a good example aswell of an intransparent privitization... Its fact that the company that runs KESC isnt very qualified, and the situation there shows that to be the case. Why did the govt sell such an important asset to such an inexperienced company?
There have also been cases where the CJ has made many, people friendly decision and chastized many high ups for abuse of power... So he was disliked by many people, including lawyers. But its wasnt because he was abusing his power, but because he was doing the right thing (even if it was a in a heavy handed manner).
This was the reason he was sacked.. The govt couldnt afford to have a CJ that acted so independantly. He would make it difficult for the govt to make its underhanded deals
Plus its an election year, so Govt cant afford a judge that isnt in their pocket.
And Musharaf hasnt done what he promised in terms of social change. Outside of the Protection of womens act, nothing else has changed. He has bent over backwards to appease religous parties and yet we are still threatened by the Taliban in NWFP and Hafsa people in Islamabad...
And now they are trying to stifle independance of media! So Musharaf is acting like a true dictator these days.
And yaar, any other country, and the govt would be brought on for treason for what happened in Karachi..
Not only did the president saab leave the city to the whims of a gang of thugs, he has refused to allow any kind of investigation into what happened that day... So are we to simply accept that, to be the destiny of the country? That any second, rule of law can break down and we are all on our own? Musharaf is no longer interested in social order, he is in it to stay in power!
