Had he lived, he still would not have been able to become the leader of Afghanistan. The reason Hamid Karzai became president is that the Pashtuns of Afghanistan would never have accepted a non-Pashtun president. This would have ruled out the Tajik Ahmed Shah Massoud.
He would have been relegated to a regional role like all the other non-Pashtun warlords.
