Pakistan’s captain Shahid Afridi ‘raised concerns about Mazhar Majeed two months ago’

*Pakistan’s cricket coach and manager were warned about the potential influence of the man at the centre of the match fixing allegations by the team’s then captain two months ago, it was claimed last night. *

Shahid Afridi – who retired as test captain in July but will lead his team in the one day series if it goes ahead – allegedly voiced fears to the players and Pakistani Cricket Board about Mazhar Majeed’s hold over the team.
Sources said Afridi organised a formal meeting with Yawar Saeed, the Pakistani manager, and coach Waqar Younis while the team was in Sri Lanka in June.

He also apparently told the players to “stay away” from Mr Majeed and his brother Azhar.
However, several members were seen with Mr Majeed only a few weeks ago in the players’ hotel.
Last night, it emerged that despite Mr Majeed’s boast that he represents seven Pakistani players, he is not formally registered as an agent in Britain.
The Professional Cricket Association – which holds a list of recognised agents - said they “had never heard” of him.
More details about Mr Majeed’s business dealings emerged as 23 out of 26 companies he set up were found to have been dissolved, some amid financial difficulty.
The 35-year-old was bailed pending further inquiries on Sunday after being arrested on Saturday over claims he was paid £150,000 by a tabloid newspaper to corrupt a Test match at Lord’s.
Three officials from Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency flew to London yesterday to assist Scotland Yard’s inquiry.
Umran Khan, director of Aces Middle East Sports Management in Dubai which represents Afridi, said the player had spoken of his concerns about Mr Majeed.
**He told The Daily Telegraph: “Before the tour kicked off, Shahid Afridi contacted some of the PCB management and made his reservations known about Mazhar Majeed and his brother Azhar.
“He made it clear to the players that they needed to stay away from these characters.
“Still, I was in the team hotel before the Oval test earlier this month and I saw some of the players with these two guys in the hotel. **
“If the PCB is not going to do anything about this, then the International Cricket Council must take the bull by the horns.”
On Sunday, Mr Saeed said: “When we started this tour, I told the players they should not be entertaining these two in their hotel rooms.”
**Last night he could not recall the June meeting with Afridi, but added: “I cannot remember what was said in June off the top of my head.” **
Four players – test captain Salman Butt, bowlers Mohammed Asif and Mohammed Amir and wicket keeper Kamran Akmal – may be suspended for the one day internationals which start next Sunday.

Pak match-fixing scandal: Indian Don approached Oz players, says report

NDTV Correspondent, Updated: August 31, 2010 13:50 IST

The world of cricket gets murkier. An Australian newspaper has now reported that players Shane Watson and Brad Haddin were approached by a suspected Indian gangster and both reported it to the authorities.

A report published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday morning suggests that the two Australian cricketers, Watson and Haddin, were approached by a suspected Indian gangster with links to illegal bookmakers.

This allegedly happened during Australia’s tour of England last year and then the T20 World Cup.

The newspaper report said both cricketers reported the incident to authorities and neither is suspected of any wrongdoing. It also said that the same man approached other international cricketers, an official from Cricket Australia and a member of the media during the T20 World Cup in England.

The ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) is believed to have started investigating this.

Pakistan’s Australian tour in January this year, particularly the Sydney Test, has now come under scrutiny after a British tabloid published details of a sting operation where a bookie boasted of how he had fixed matches.

However it has now emerged that the ICC’s ACSU had told three countries in the sub-continent to keep a close watch on their players. One of the tainted Pakistani players Mohamed Asif’s former girlfriend Veena Mallik claims that the bowler had told her that Pakistan would not win any match till 2010.

Pak match-fixing scandal: ‘Bookie’ named by Asif’s ex-girlfriend Veena Malik denies allegations**
**
http://www.ndtv.com/article/sports/pak-match-fixing-scandal-bookie-named-by-asifs-ex-girlfriend-veena-malik-denies-allegations-48392

London: The alleged bookmaker named by Pakistani pacer Mohammad Asif’s former girlfriend, Veena Malik, has denied having any role in the latest match-fixing scandal.

Veena, a popular Pakistani actress, had claimed on Monday that she has proof of Asif’s involvement in spot-fixing and that he has been in touch with bookmakers in the recent past.

She had a much publicised break-up with Asif earlier this year. Speaking on television, Veena said Asif used to be in touch with an Indian bookmaker named Dixit, who paid him for spot-fixing in matches. (Read:Veena Malik, ex-girlfriend, says Asif worked with Indian bookie)

“Asif used to call up this Indian bookmaker and other bookies as well on the phone of his servant. I have evidence of the messages he exchanged with the bookies,” she said as she waved around a paper having a list of messages.

But speaking to NDTV from London, Dheeraj Dixit, who is an Indian photographer, denied this. He infact claimed that Veena Malik was the one who called him saying she was managing some Pakistani players and if he could put her in touch with some Indian businessmen, they could earn good money.

**"She approached me in January…either on 9th or 10th… when I was on the tour to Bangladesh, Dhaka. There was a triangular series happening in Dhaka. Veena Malik called me there in Bangladesh and told me that ‘I am wife of Asif.’ It was a conversation for 20-22 minutes. In the last 5-7 minutes, she started talking about own business. She said she was managing six to seven Pakistani players…she said she is managing everything.

“Then and she told me, ‘If you know any businessman or big man in India we can earn a lot of money.’ So I just asked her one question - ‘Everyone wants to earn money but I don’t know the formulae how they become a millionaire in a night…either it might be bank dacoity or something.’ Then she tried to tell me that all matches are fixed. I don’t know why she approached me. That’s the question because I never called her,” Dixit said when asked why Veena Malik took his name if he was innocent.**

Veena broke up with Asif after the latter married as per his parents’ wishes. She had filed a court case against Asif for recovery of some 13 million rupees earlier this year after their break-up, with the cricketer denying he owed her anything.

After an ugly exchange of allegations in the media, both reached a settlement on the intervention of a mutual friend.

Veena said Asif had told her that Pakistan would not win any Test series until 2010 and that good money was to be earned from spot fixing without affecting results of the matches.

“I have more evidence of his involvement and I can show that he and some other players also indulged in spot fixing on the Australian tour,” she said.

She also alleged that Asif had paid bribes to escape a longer suspension when he tested positive in a dope test during the Indian Premier League two years back.

Salman Butt, Aamer and Asif summoned

In a dramatic twist to the spot-fixing scandal that has rocked world cricket, the three tainted Pakistan players — Test captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif — were on Tuesday barred from practice at Taunton and asked to return to London for a meeting with top Pakistan officials.
The development came amid intense speculation that the three players, who find themselves at the centre of the scandal, could be suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) which has come under increasing pressure from its English counterpart to take strict action against the cricketers.
Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed said the three players did not have nets with the rest of the team because they were preparing for a meeting at the Pakistan High Commission in London on Wednesday.
“The three are not practising today and they have to go to London to attend the meeting at the High Commission in connection with the ongoing investigations into spot-fixing,” Yawar said.
Although Yawar did not specify whether the three players would be subjected to another round of interrogation by Scotland Yard, there was speculation that the players could be questioned again. However, there was no official confirmation yet.
Pakistan has retained all the three players named in the scandal in its one-day squad for the series against England and the team plays a practice match at Taunton on September 2.
** No suspensions **

A PCB spokesman said on Tuesday that no player would be suspended until a final inquiry report into the charges against him was delivered to the board by Thursday.
The spokesman declined to comment when asked if the accused players would be considered for the first T20 International on Sunday if the report didn’t come in by that time.
Yawar further said the High Commissioner had invited a leading British legal expert to be present along with PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt.
“In all probability, the PCB chief and the High Commissioner will talk to the players in front of the legal expert and take a decision on the future course of action in the investigations,” one team source said.
He said the decision to not allow the three players to practice with the team came after a meeting held between one-day captain Shahid Afridi, Yawar, coach Waqar Younis and the PCB chairman.
“The idea apparently is that the players accused of fixing should be kept away from media glare and have been told to remain indoors in the hotel to avoid more controversies,” the source added.
The development comes amid strong indications that the PCB has resolved dismissing the three players.
Geo TV reported that the PCB had taken this decision and it might be implemented before Thursday.
** More trouble **

There was more trouble for the Pakistan team with another report claiming that Scotland Yard investigators last weekend recovered wads of cash worth £50,000 from Butt’s hotel room at the Marriott at Swiss Cottage in London.
When asked about the cash, Butt had reportedly told the investigators that it had been collected for his sister’s trousseau.
**Sources in the team are now saying that Butt was responsible for the clout that bookie and player agent Mazhar Majeed enjoyed in the team. Asif had also reportedly told investigators that it was Butt who had introduced Majeed to the players. **

‘Innocent until proven guilty’

Pakistan cricket bosses demand proof of their players’ match-fixing

KARACHI - Pakistan authorities yesterday closed ranks around the country’s top cricketers accused of match-fixing, as captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif travel to London today to meet with Pakistan officials.

Team manager Yawar Saeed made the announcement yesterday in the team hotel in Taunton, England, and said Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ejaz Butt and the country’s high commissioner will attend the meeting.

Saeed says the three players are then expected to return to the squad.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said earlier that they would not suspend the four players named under investigation by Scotland Yard detectives over claims they deliberately bowled no-balls against England in last week’s Test as part of a lucrative gambling scam.

Three other unnamed players are part of the British police inquiry, which follows a sting by British Sunday newspaper the News of the World, where a bookmaker allegedly paid Pakistani players to deliberately bowl the no-balls.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik hinted that the spot-fixing allegations against Pakistan’s top cricketers could have been cooked up as part of a conspiracy against the national side.

“If there is a conspiracy against our team to defame Pakistan then we would like to know the facts and we will exonerate ourselves,” said Malik.

“We know that there have been many conspiracies against Pakistan cricket in the past and perhaps there will also be in future. We are keeping this in mind.”

Malik said the interior ministry had contacted a representative of Scotland Yard in Pakistan for information on progress in the investigation and that there’s no need to rush an investigation team to Britain.

He added that the video evidence was not conclusive.

“Video can be fake … we will believe it only when we have an authentic report that can stand the test of a court of law.”

PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar insisted the players would continue their tour in England until there was definitive proof of wrongdoing.

“Chairman Ijaz Butt just told me that since there is a case going on with the Scotland Yard we are not going to suspend any player,” said Sarwar.

Re: Arrest Over Cricket ‘Match-Fixing’ At Lords

Alleged fixer’s tangled web of businesses

The businessman at the centre of the Pakistan match-fixing allegations has been involved with almost 30 companies in recent years, all but three of which have now closed down.

Two of the firms formerly run by Mazhar Majeed, who was questioned by police over an alleged betting scam that has stunned the world of cricket, had assets worth more than £1million seized by receivers after running into financial difficulties.

He is still a property developer in Croydon, South London, with a bookmakers and two bank branches in his portfolio, but is owed more than £160,000 by his own company.

Mr Majeed, 35, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers after being caught by a Sunday newspaper allegedly agreeing to take £150,000 in cash in return for guaranteeing that Pakistani bowlers would deliver no-balls in the Test at Lord’s.

Although he claimed to act for several members of the team, he is not registered as an agent and almost all of his business interests relate to property development.

Analysis of Companies House records shows that he has been registered as a director of 26 companies over the past decade, 20 of which were set up on the same day in April 2008 and all called Capital Investments.

Of these companies, just three are still trading – an ice cream parlour called Afters Tooting Ltd and two development vehicles called Capital Investments No 2 and Capital Investments No 17.

Capital Investments No 17 owes Mr Majeed £161,666 in an “interest free loan” while the other firm owes him £1,429.

His sister-in-law, Jenna Manji, was listed as a director of five of the other Capital Investments companies, now dissolved.

His wife, Sheliza Manji, was a director of one of his other dissolved firms, Newdelta Developments.

Two of the companies Mr Majeed was involved with had to call in the receivers.

Valeco Ltd, set up three years ago, has been in receivership since April having taken out an £800,000 NatWest loan on a property in Croydon.

Able Trading Ltd, a property rental firm set up in 1997, was liquated owing £586,732 because “the company cannot, by reason of its liabilities, continue its business”.

Almost all of the companies were registered at an office in Croydon called Bluesky House, where his main company Bluesky Developments was based.

Mr Majeed was not listed as a director of Bluesky and its accounts are not available although Companies House files show it owes £74,163 in five outstanding County Court Judgements.

His former business partner says they closed the property renovation business down when the recession hit.

The website for his Capital Developments company states that it owns several retail buildings in South London, including a branch of William Hill in Brixton and two branches of Barclays Bank in Croydon.

He also owns a £1.8m six-bedroom mansion, which was searched by police and tax officials on Sunday, as well as an Aston Martin sports car.

Mr Majeed became “co-owner” of Croydon Athletic FC in summer 2008, and at the same time was director of a short-lived company called Metrocroft (CAFC) Ltd. Another firm of his called Metrocroft Consultants Ltd was said to have made unspecified investments of £1,024,104.

A YouTube video shows Mr Majeed appearing in a spoof documentary about a fictional Croydon football club called the Terriers, who share a ground with the real Croydon Athletic.

One scene in the trailer for Road to FA Cup shows Mr Majeed telling a player: “I want the keys back for my Aston. Until this rent’s paid, I want the keys back.”

By IMRAN KHAN

Pakistan cricket legend

IF these allegations are true, it is probably the biggest blow to Pakistan cricket.

There should be exemplary punishment so future generations realise crime does not pay. It could end the careers of the two best bowlers in the world.

Demoralisation has reached the point of extreme in the last two days. The general feeling is it's one thing after another.

First we were called a terrorist country because a dictator pulled us into someone else's war. Then there were the floods which left millions homeless. Now this. It has shattered everyone in Pakistan.

Re: Arrest Over Cricket ‘Match-Fixing’ At Lords

Looks like a real crook and probably a habitual gambler.

Re: Arrest Over Cricket 'Match-Fixing' At Lords

And recommended Salman for captaincy.....what a great servant of country afridi is...isnt he?

Re: Arrest Over Cricket 'Match-Fixing' At Lords

This is probably the worst thing to ever happen to Pakistani Cricket....even worse than the attack on Sri Lankan Cricket Team because that was something that they could not control.

This was....

These bozos have ashamed Pakistan.

I think its time for Imran Khan to end his nonsensical political career and run the PCB.

He is the only Pakistani Cricket Player respected throughout the world and thus he should run Pakistani Cricket and end the corruption which has crippled it.

Re: Arrest Over Cricket 'Match-Fixing' At Lords

^^ nonsensical political carrer? well even if he runs PCB you will call him nonsensical Chairman. If he is doing something he is doing for Pakistan, either its politics of cricket. So nothing in "nonsensical" about his political career.

Re: Arrest Over Cricket ‘Match-Fixing’ At Lords

Malik hints at conspiracy behind match-fixing row

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Tuesday that there might be a conspiracy behind the match-fixing scam adding that initial report has been sought from the Scotland Yard.

“We will believe only when we have concrete evidence with us,” Malik told reporters after attending a high level meeting at the National Crisis Management Cell and meeting with Sports Minister Ijaz Jhakrani here on Tuesday.

Malik said a preliminary report on the matter had been sought and that the Pakistan government had written to Scotland Yard through Interpol to get more facts.

Rehman Malik said that stern action would be taken if any cricketer is found guilty in the match fixing allegations.

He said that investigations have commenced regarding the involvement of cricketers in a match fixing allegation made by British media; an investigative team of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) would visit the United Kingdom to probe the matter after the report of the Scotland Yard. The probe team would search whether or not the match was fixed, or team players were fixed for spot.

If any of the players are involved, we will make an example of it and strict action will be taken,” he added.

He said it has been decided to form a 3 member investigative committee consisting of FIA officers and an officer of Ministry of Sports. The ream would consist of Director FIA Admin Headquarter Inam Ghani and Assistant Director FIA Karachi Agha Ishrat while the third member would be nominated by the Sports Minister.

Rehman Malik said that this team would leave for UK after permission from UK. He said that however if the Scotland Yard and Interpol does not provide us the initial report than this team would proceed to UK with or without permission.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani said that no charges had been framed against the team so far and until they are charged with something they would continue to play.

Jakhrani stated that alternate team of Pakistan wouldn’t be send to UK for One-day series.

He said we would not bring back any player until charges against them are proven.

He said that he would meet with prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani today (Wednesday) after which he would be in the position to say whether PCB chairman should be removed or not

Earlier in the day, PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt said, “There is a case going on over here with Scotland Yard. This is only an allegation. There is still no charge or proof on the account. So at this stage, no action will be taken.”

The ICC’s anti-corruption unit has been asked to submit a report on its investigations within the next three days.

Not enough evidence against Mazhar: Parry

There is insufficient evidence to press charges against alleged fixer Mazhar Majeed, who was caught on camera accepting money, feels Rick Parry, chairman of a UK commission set up to investigate ganbling-related threat of corruption in sport.

The former CEO of Liverpool Football Club feels the video footage which shows him predicting three no-balls which were eventually bowled by Pakistan pacers Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif, won’t be sufficient to nail him.

“I don’t think (the case) has any evidence at all,” said Parry.

“Unless the News of the World placed a bet - which would be highly unlikely because in so doing they would have carried out a criminal act - then there doesn’t appear to be any betting activity at all associated with these particular allegations. It places the ball, to pardon the pun, squarely back into the hands of the cricket authorities,” he said.
