I'm glad money is being spent to upgrade Pakistani Military machine... the more the better the stronger. The hell with those who say we need to spend more on education and health... education and health for what use when we can't defend those that need health and education?
Our Education and Health Care system should be modeled on Cuba which has one of the best Health Care and Education systems in the world
Fine. So you mean to say we cut down our defence budget, stay satisfied on our falling aircraft, obsolete tanks and hallucinate to beat our neighbour in any future conflict (acting sane)?
Exactly.
We need to have credible minimum deterrence that any invasion of Pakistan by India will cause India such heavy losses that it won't even attempt it.
President General Perverz Musharraf Wednesday said that a 15-year comprehensive plan has been finalized to equip the armed forces with state-of-the-art weapon systems to enable them to meet any external challenge. He was addressing the troops at Jhelum Garrison to mark the conclusion of 34th annual PARA Central Meet which got together top notch marksmen drawn from the three armed forces, rangers, and the Police. Vice Chief of Army Staff General Ahsan Saleem Hayat and other officials of armed forces attended the functions held at the ground of Pakistan Army rifle Association in the Jhelum Garrison.
The President while speaking on the occasion said, “Strong armed forces is the guarantee to the security and solidarity of the country.”
He said the imbalance and deficiencies are being removed and new weapon systems for the Army including long range guns, Orlikon air defence system, night fighting and electronic capability warfare are being inducted to bolster the professional defence capability. Similarly, he said, Pakistan Nay is also being equipped with modern submarines, eight P-3 C aircraft and four surface ships are being inducted to enhance the its operational capabilities.
The President said Pakistan Air Force is being provided with state-of- the-art fighter planes, including JF-17 Thunder. He said two such aircraft have already arrived in Pakistan while the serial production would start next year.
He said F-16 block-52, fighter planes which are the advance version of the series, would soon be inducted in the air force. He said Pakistan is also planning to acquire highly sophisticated and advanced fighter plane F-10, Airborne Warning Aircraft System (AWACS), Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missiles (BVR) and air to air refueling system which would give fighting punch to the Air Force.
The President said Babar Cruise Missiles are being tested to enhance their range from 500 to 1000 km and would soon be inducted in the armed forces. He said the short, medium and long range ballistic missiles systems have already been inducted in Pakistan Army and now it is being tested by them.
How does $4.4 billion for defence spending out of $25 billion (2006 budget) come to 35-40% of the total?
And you do realise, over a million people's jobs depend on defence?
First of all, Pakistan's budget officially is more than $4.4 B as it increased 2-3 years back when busharraf said we could support it. A lot of underreporting also happens because the lands, corporations and retirement funds don't come out of this $4.4 B budget but from the rest of the budget [sort of like a supplemental in the US but 100% non-transparent].
Btw, who told you Pakistan's budget is $25 billion? I am shocked unless we are spending Capital $$ expenditure [more loans and infamous "aid"] which what usually happens.
China is rumored to spend more than England *. China is making big-ticket acquisitions while England is reeling from the costs of Iraq / Afghanistan and have cut back on armed forces toys. I suggest you visit the skyscrapercity forum british section to get some “view”. Secondly, there is no other navy in the world right now that has the all-weather, all-year round massive naval capability like the US. Russia [USSR] was a close second but I don’t think they are competing with the US on ship-by-ship basis but more on offensive weapons that can make the US fleets look like a big white elephant. This is the same technique that you see China is working on as well by inducting missiles like Yakhont.
As for deterrant, this is what our nuclear program is for. Do you think that w/o nukes, India wouldn’t have had invaded Pakistan in 2002??? I would have supported military spending as in the past but look at where it is going [land deals, personal deals with no oversight] so I am against it now especially in the current context. All these weapons are useless if we are not self-sufficient industrially. I believe all of you kids make fun of Arabs for the same reason in other threads, don’t you? *
