This question has intrigued me for the past few days. Why do we argue ?What do we try to prove? Discussions increase knowledge but arguments and fights don't.
Why do we argue?
For various reasons. Could be that the topic of discussion is something you're very sensitive about...and can't tolerate narrow-mindedness over it. Maybe in some way......your rights are not being considered or are being infringed upon.
How the other person reacts can even turn a discussion into an argument. When you're dealing with someone who has too much pride....won't listen/let you get a word in...has the my way or the highway attitude.........you may feel more compelled to emphasize your points in an even stronger way....leading to an argument.
Discussions CAN increase knowledge and I think that when someone expresses their points in a civil way....you may be open to consideration. However if worded with arrogance....it can hinder that open mindedenss....cause resentment.etc.
