i'm really meh on tiffany- i've seen first hand what a good quality diamond from tiffany's looks like and what a good quality diamond from elsewhere looks like. and there is no different except for the price. its like buying anything else brand-name- you pay more for the name and the blue box than for the product.
and what sumorani said- definitely achieve a balance! no point buying a dull 1 ct when a really high quality .75 will look so much better. and shape always influences how big it looks too- a 1ct pear looks much larger than a 1ct round or princess cut... there are many ways of ensuring you buy the diamond you love for the price you can afford.
