Arabs Say World Ignores Israel's Nuclear Program

By Carol Giacomo

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - With the world pressing Iran and North Korea (news - web sites) to give up nuclear programs, Arab states on Monday criticized the West for allowing Israel to remain outside global nonproliferation regimes.

Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons capability but has not signed on to major agreements, including the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which is aimed at curbing the spread of nuclear arms.

“What surprises us is that at a time when the International Atomic Energy Agency is intensifying its efforts and monitoring (NPT) members countries … we see that it continues to ignore the rejection of Israel in not joining the treaty,” Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly.

“This constitutes a serious threat to the security and stability of the whole region,” he said.

Under U.S. pressure, the IAEA – the U.N. nuclear watchdog – has given Iran until Oct. 31 to prove Tehran’s claim that it has no intention of developing nuclear arms and it merely hopes to use nuclear technology to produce electricity.

Meanwhile, the United States, China, Russia, South Korea (news - web sites) and Japan have been working to engage Pyongyang in a negotiating process aimed at persuading the North to abandon its nuclear weapons programs.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said: “It is unacceptable that Israel’s possession of such weapons should remain a reality that some prefer to ignore or prevent the international community … from facing it squarely and frankly.”

Syria, accused by the United States of developing chemical and biological arms, took aim at both Washington and Israel.

Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara noted that “a lot has been said lately about the dangers of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by countries that already have different types of such weapons.”

“Some have even waged war under the pretext of eliminating these weapons,” he said in an apparent reference to the United States and its war to oust Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) in Iraq (news - web sites).

Shara called it “regrettable … that some quarters selectively choose to level their false accusations at some Arab and Islamic states but not on others, while simultaneously ignoring the Israeli arsenal of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.”

The Arab ministers repeated their support for making the Middle East region free from all weapons of mass destruction.

Israel maintains an ambiguity about its weapons programs but Joe Circincione of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has written that the Jewish state is believed to have between 100-200 nuclear weapons, a stockpile of chemical weapons and an active biological arms program.

Well, those are safe hands, aren't they? every other day bombardment of civilian society and demolishing homes is "pre-emptive" and "punishment" and that all is fine until ignored by Zionists or pro-Zionists.

"Its becasue they(arabs) are evil, Charlie"

what? isreal? WMD? you must be joking. its such a nice, friendly and peaceloving nation. why would it make WMD? :)

^^ Yeah they are under constant attack. Poor babies, take in over $ 9 Billion in aid and weapons and still need nuclear program. However, it will be wrong for Iran to possess a nuclear weapon becasue their citizens lives are not worth protecting. Again, I forgot "Its because the are evil, Charlie". :)

Oy a Jewish bomp, vill it make a mushroom volkn vill it?

I owp you kepth zhe coupon Mindel.

Who cares what the arabs say?

Isn't it ironic, the only country that ever used a nuclear bomb has the gaul to go around telling others that they can't have such weapons. Oh yeah, like saving American military lives in WW2 was worth the killing of millions of Japanese civilians. What's that telling others, your people are not worth the same as American lives. We can use such weapons to protect ourselves, but you people are immature and don't understand their power, hence you don't deserve them, even it means protecting your lives.

Well, we will make one exception. Israeli lives are now just as important as U.S. lives, so their nuclear and biological weapons programs are exempt from scrutiny.

Ofcourse Indians would say that! These days your love affair with Israel is at its peak!;)

Well, isn't it interesting that the Arabs have finally realized that their neighbor possess a nuclear bomb. I wonder why are these nations slow to pick up such information and raise a hue and cry regarding it...

Precisely part of the problem. sigh

Kick everyone out of the Middle East. Problem solved.

“It’s a very serious issue that Israel has a nuclear program that’s not safeguarded with the International Atomic Energy Agency, that it’s not a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and that it has rebuffed all of Egypt’s attempts to convince it to become party to a region free of nuclear weapons.”

If it is serious about making the Middle East a region of peace, the United States should pressure Israel to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and require the country to undergo nuclear weapons inspections, Egypt’s ambassador to the United States says.

In an interview with The Chronicle, Nabil Fahmy decried what he called a double standard in U.S. foreign policy and said the Bush administration must lean on Israel to the same extent it has on Iran, which agreed this week to inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency. …
