Do you reckon another Bichel example in the makin’?

**I’m pleased to be given the chance to head across to the West Indies - but certainly our thoughts are with the McGraths at the moment

Brad Williams **

Williams in for McGrath

Brad Williams will join the Australian cricket team in the West Indies after fellow fast bowler Glenn McGrath returned home.

McGrath’s wife Jane has again been diagnosed with cancer.

She had a mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, but is now suffering a secondary cancer infection in her hip, according to the Australian Cricket Board.

The ACB said in a statement that **“all indications are that with treatment, she will have a full recovery”. **

McGrath is returning to Australia from the team’s stopover in London.

The couple asked that their privacy be respected and they are not expected to comment further on the illness.

Williams was in camp in Brisbane with the Australia A team, preparing to play South Africa A.

He will leave Australia and meet up with the squad in Georgetown, Guyana, on Sunday.

ACB chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said: **"It is an unfortunate situation confronting the McGrath family and it was important that Glenn return home to be with his wife.

“We will talk with Glenn over the weekend to ascertain his position and see how everything is progressing.” **

He added: **“Brad has bowled consistently during the summer and has been in contention for some time, so we expect him to slot in nicely with the balance of the team and make a strong impact with his pace and accuracy.” **

Damien Martyn ruled out of Travelex Test series against the West Indies](http://uk.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2003/APR/165442_ACB_03APR2003.html)

The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) announced today that batsman Damien Martyn has been ruled out of the Travelex Test series against the West Indies due to a fractured right index finger.

A replacement for the West Australian is expected to be named by the National Selection Panel in the coming days.

Martyn, who consulted a hand specialist in Perth earlier today (3 April) learned that the fracture, sustained during Australia’s World Cup match against Kenya on 15 March, had shifted in position.

He is not expected to commence batting for another four weeks before being reviewed ahead of the one-day international leg of the tour.

Australian Team Physiotherapist Errol Alcott said advice received from Martyn’s medical examination indicated that he would require more time for the fracture to heel than first anticipated.

“We have been advised that the fracture in Damien’s finger has shifted, meaning that it is not yet stable enough to withstand the rigours of international cricket,” Alcott said.

"He has limited movement in the finger, meaning he certainly would not be available for this Test series.

“The fracture will need protection for up to four weeks, after which we are hopeful the heeling process has taken hold and he is fit enough to be available for one-day international selection,” he said.

It is sad that Damien Martyn hasn't recovered from his finger injury, :( though there has been a complication with the injury having shifted. I thought that the obvious replacement would have been Martin Love - but not so. Brad Williams will probably become a full Squad member eventually - This will be a good chance for him to show his skills!

I don't think Damien Martyn will be much missed, Martin Love would be great replacement. I had a chance to see him play in the Ashes against England on his debut and he was very good.

West Indies name squad for first Cable & Wireless Test](http://uk.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2003/APR/166454_WI_06APR2003.html)

West Indies have named the following 14-member squad for the opening Cable & Wireless Test Match of four against Australia at Bourda Oval in Georgetown, Guyana, starting on Thursday.

Brian Lara (captain
Carlton Baugh
David Bernard
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Pedro Collins
Vasbert Drakes
Mervyn Dillon
Daren Ganga
Wavell Hinds
Carl Hooper
Ridley Jacobs
Jermaine Lawson
Marlon Samuels
Devon Smith

Lots of new faces I've noticed in the squad of West Indies. Sarwan and Gayle absence will play a huge factor in the 1st Test Match. Too early to draw conclusion but I see 1st Test Match goin' Aussies way as they, particularly Mattew Hayden and Steve Waugh, outclassed Caribbean boys in the warm-up match yesterday.

More pressure mounts on Lara. :)

Where are Gayle and Sarwan, without them Windies will be more vulnerable.

The Game Responds:

*Does anyone know if Dish Network would be covering this series on TV? The Australia - West Indies series is always fun to watch. People, That Is All.*

Sarwan is unfit and Gayle was dropped because he didnt participate in some first class tournament instead he chose to play in double wicket tournament.
This is creating lots of controversy.
Without these guys it will be all the more easier for Aussies.
But then aussies also dont have Macgrath ann Martyn.

I doubt it.

In 1999, TV Asia showed the whole coverage of the Australia vs. West Indies series. Sometimes I think that TV Asia has some rights to games played only in West Indies.

Anyways, West Indies v/s Australia is always great to watch. One of the biggest rivalries in test cricket.

Hooper out of the Test Series. I reckon how things shaped up among the members of West Indies Cricket Board; and then at age 36, Hooper made the right decision. This is will give WICB opportunity to give chances to the youngsters, homies!

**Hooper’s captaincy was not a success **

Hooper out of WIndies Squad

Former West Indies captain Carl Hooper has pulled out of the squad to face Australia in the home Test series starting on Thursday.

A West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) spokeswoman said that Hooper, replaced by Brian Lara as captain in March, had changed his mind and would not be playing against the world champions.

**“This has been a difficult decision but one I felt must be made given the developments in recent weeks and the new direction the team is heading,” ** Hooper said in the statement.

**“Though it’s tempting to play, it would curtail the development of a younger player and, as I see it, also a backward step for West Indies cricket.” **

The squad announced last month included wholesale changes from the party which failed to progress past the opening group stage in the World Cup.

The 36-year-old has played 102 tests for West Indies with a batting average of 36.46 and 49.42 with the ball.

He took over as skipper when Lara stepped down three years ago after West Indies were white-washed on a tour of New Zealand.

Australia will play four Tests and seven one-day internationals, starting on April 10.

So West Indies is going to face those butchers without Sarwan,Gayle and Hooper.Allah Raham kare !!!!!!

PT smells Aussies Power. Damn Homies!

Ready for Caribbean challenge - By Justin Langer, Australian Batsman

Although it took what felt like an eternity to arrive, it was a great joy to finally land in the Caribbean for the start of our 2003 tour of these diverse, exciting, proud, cricket-loving countries known to us as the West Indies.

Having left my home port of Perth at 6:00am last Monday morning, my back felt like it had moulded into the shape of an airplane seat by the time we finally touched down in Guyana at 9:00pm on Wednesday.

If you add a 10-hour time difference it might make a little more sense when I confess to falling asleep about a minute after entering my hotel room in Georgetown, Guyana.

[thumb=B]_39061157_walk203ap.JPG[/thumb]

The locals have not been slow to tell us what they think of us.

Twelve hours after dropping like a bowling ball onto the middle of the mattress, I woke up still wearing my suit pants, shirt and loose tie around my neck.

It’s my third trip to the West Indies and the previous are entrenched in my memory bank as up there with my favourite cricket tours.

Back in 1995, we were able to win the Frank Worrell Trophy for the first time in two decades and although I didn’t face a single ball of Test match cricket I can confidently say that that series had the most profound impact on me as a player and person.

I watched from the changing rooms as the Waugh brothers, Mark Taylor, Shane Warne, David Boon, Glenn McGrath and co produced performances that helped inspire Australian cricket to new heights.

[thumb=B]_39061169_lara203.JPG[/thumb]

Lara’s genius means West Indies pose a real threat

**The 1999 tour left me with mixed feelings as it was Steve Waugh’s first series as captain and one in which the team lost its way to complacency and the festive spirit of the Caribbean atmosphere.

After comprehensively winning the first Test match in Trinidad, Brian Lara decided it was time to fight back - and fight back he did, playing three of the greatest Test match innings I’ve ever witnessed.

A scintillating double hundred in the next Test in Jamaica was followed by a match winning 150 in Barbados and an awesome 80-ball century in the final Test in Antigua.

Rather than a whitewash series as we had expected after the first Test, the result was a hard fought 2-2 score-line which allowed us to retain the trophy, while losing some pride along the way.

Looking back, that 1999 result is significant now, in that I wouldn’t be surprised if the result then, didn’t contribute to Steve Waugh’s decision to continue playing Test cricket. **

Knowing his determined character he will be keen to show how much this team has developed since he took over the leadership four years ago.

[thumb=B]_39061161_waugh203ap.JPG[/thumb]

Steve Waugh, the skipper decided not to call time on his career

After months of will he or won’t he retire speculation, let me just say I am delighted the skipper is here to lead the team for one last time in a place where he has excelled so many times before.

We all know that we are going to have to be on top of our game if we want to retain the trophy.

**While we have the momentum and confidence gained by the guys in their triumphant World Cup campaign, we know that for the second consecutive Test match we will be without superstars Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath. **

Their loss, and the absence of Damien Martyn with a broken finger, is sure to have an impact on the team, but it also opens up the opportunity for some new blood into the ranks of this team which has been largely settled for some time now.

**New faces and enthusiasm is always a welcome ally and while the loss of such stars is difficult to absorb, the World Cup highlighted just how a champion team will beat a team of champions any day. **

Yeah, they also showed West Indies 5 test matches in Australia in 2001, which Australia won by 5-0.

McGrath to make Windies Tests](BBC SPORT | Cricket | WI v Aus 2003 | McGrath heads for Caribbean)

Fast bowler Glenn McGrath hopes to rejoin the Australia team for the final two Tests of their series in the West Indies.
McGrath returned home last week after his wife, Jane, was diagnosed with a secondary cancer infection in her hip.

She is to undergo radiation therapy and doctors expect her to make a full recovery.

The Australian Cricket Board announced on Tuesday that McGrath would fly back to the Caribbean on 21 April, providing there were no setbacks in his wife’s condition.

That would enable him to play in a three-day game against a University of West Indies XI, prior to the Tests in Barbados and Antigua and seven one-day internationals.

The Test series begins in Guyana on Thursday, with the second match following in Trinidad on 19 April.

McGrath has an excellent record against the West Indies, having taken 94 wickets in 18 Tests at an average of 17.96.

Overall, the 33-year-old has 422 Test wickets to his credit, putting him sixth on the all-time list, and he needs only 10 more to overtake New Zealand’s Sir Richard Hadlee and 13 to move above former Indian captain Kapil Dev.

Spinner Shane Warne (491) is the only Australian bowler to have taken more Test wickets.

Hooper has a change of heart](http://uk.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2003/APR/167064_WI_07APR2003.html)

Chairman of Selectors, Sir Vivian Richards has confirmed that former West Indies Captain, Carl Hooper told him today that he had reconsidered his decision to be available to play in the First Cable and Wireless Test against Australia and would therefore not play when the match bowls off on Thursday.

Sir Vivian said that he had previously delayed announcement of the final squad for the First Cable and Wireless Test while he awaited a response from Hooper about his willingness to continue playing for West Indies and his availability. Hooper had responded that he would be willing to play in the team and would be available for the First Test. He was therefore named as a member of the squad.

Sir Vivian said: “Even though I am surprised by Carl’s change of heart, I want to wish him well in whatever he decides to do from here on. While he has not indicated that he has retired I still want to thank him for his service to the team and West Indies cricket.”

What! Hooper has a change of heart. Sounds more like a Dating Game than Cricket Team Selection. :hehe: Damn homies!

Yeah, I want McGrath to make it in the Test Series. I hope Jane recovers soon, Godwilling. McGrath’s bowling average is very successful against the Caribbean boys!

WOW. Have a look in the second inning of the warm-up match, Aussies were totally collasped. Aussies must have felt glad that the match ended as a draw.
