Does a person with an engineering background, with MS from a top ten school and 4 years of work experience, have any realistic chance of having a successful career in Investment Banking (or any other financial field for that matter) after getting an MBA from a top 10/20/30 school?
Does age matter here? Like if you are 30 by the time you finish your MBA, does it count against you?
Above all, would such a career switch a sane move at all?

Wane, while the bulge bracket banks like a certain pedigree. There are other places where one can larn, grow and do tremendously well in investment banking. hedgefunds, venture funds and PE funds are examples because they are usually sector or investement strategy specific and someone with a good tech background and an MBA will be a perfect candidate.

Matsui, that is good to hear. I am not sure how receptive is the financial industry to the techies. I dont want to spend a good amount of my time and money on getting my MBA only to hear a mocking "aap kidher" from a financial sector interviewer.

I think it would be better to ensure you graduate from a top-20 b-school. Otherwise it is infinitely harder. There are also midcap banks regional banks that have securities arms like wachovia, wells, boa, they are no slouches either.

matsui mon, granted i get a MBA from top 10 Bschool would it still be enough to get into IBanking coming with only IT exp? considering ur going up aganist other candidates who already have Ibanking exp coming out of undergrad.

Lussi the answer is yes. Not all people who end up coming into banking after MBA's have a banking background. I got into Banking coming from consulting...many folks I have known came from engineering but all had tier-1 undergrad, grad and large company experience
