Anti American attitude in the Middle East

Re: Anti American attitude in the Middle East

Not true, they only started after 1967. Before 1967 the USA had quite a lot of military sanctions against Israel.

After Israel defeated the Arabs soundly in 1967, US support for Israel began because it looked like a strong country to oppose the USSR-supported Arab world.

Basically, in the 1950, the USA very roughly demanded that Egypt, Syria, etc must stand with the West against the USSR. The arab dictators did not take kindly to this demand, then the USSR came to them and basically told them that it would treat them nicely and not make rude demands, unlike the USA. The USSR then began giving them weapons and training, which freaked out the West more.

Until 1967 France was the only country that was really willing to make big arms sales to Israel. Most other countries (including he USA) thought that Israel was ultimately doomed and it was not worth supporting them as eventually the arabs would beat them, and then the arabs would cut out any country that had supported Israel from the resources in the Middle East.

After Israel beat the arabs in 1967, the USA and West’s perception changed. They no longer viewed Israel as incapable of beating the arabs in a full scale war, but instead saw them as being able to resist the USSR’s proxies in the region.

Massive funding and arms sales followed, reflecting Cold War priorities. Eventually in the USA, both the Israeli lobby as well as the conservative religious fervour for supporting Israel built up, until you have today’s situation.
