Burney seeks clarification from interior, law ministries regarding former CJP

ISLAMABAD, Mar 5 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney Wednesday wrote a letter to the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Law and Justice, seeking an urgent report about the alleged house arrest of the former CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and his family members.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Human Rights, the Minister has sought details from both the ministries on whether the ex-CJP is under house arrest and if so under what law and for what reason.

The letter took strong notice of reports that the family members of the former CJP were also under house arrest and requested that the situation be clarified immediately.

Ansar Burney stated that in his interactions with the two ministries, he was informed that the former CJP was not under house arrest and was actually forcefully occupying the residence.

However, Burney stated, he has read media reports and statements from family members to the effect that the ex-CJP and his family are indeed under house arrest and their movement is very restricted, the press release said.

“For the reason, the Ministry of Human Rights has called for written clarification from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Law and Justice,” it added.

According to the letter, the Minister for Human Rights has stated that once these clarifications have been sent to him, he himself will visit the former CJP at his residence to confirm whether the information is correct.
