Fighting against a fellow Muslim is allowed in the case where he has openly denounced the teachings of Islam even after being given clear proofs. Fighting for the sake of an ideal against even your own brother is allowed if it means upholding the truth. As a Muslim, the American civil war to me represents something very noble and magnanimous. Brother against brother, Father against son fought for for an ideology. A belief which every one believed in and fought for. History took its course and America emerged as a nation of ideals. History also wants to take its course with the Muslim Ummah, unfortunately the west sees Islam as the biggest threat to its existence and continously intervenes in the affairs of the Ummah. Unlike the American history where the incontinent ideologies were purged, the history of the Ummah is not being allowed to take its course due to continous western intervention. THAT is what Osama Bin Laden and the other 'radicals' as you call them want. They want non-interference by the west.
As for your question about who's winning, the Pharoah ruled the Jews for centuries. It took less than a month to wipe out the trace of the Egyptian dynasty. There are many examples of great fallen empires, so let not Americans be cocky about their superiority.

There are millions of muslims in west and their no. is increasing every day..
