Very sad incident. Hopefully the perpetrators are brought to justice.
At the same time, let's not lose sight of the bigger picture: hundreds of thousands of tourists visit India every year. So statistically speaking, the chance of a tourist getting raped in India is very very low. I would imagine that female tourists visiting similar developing countries like Brazil face similar risks vis-à-vis rape so India is not an exception.
Which is not to say that no problem exists there at all. But rather that there is no need for panic either.
I thought this article was about the Arab perverts.
Yeh kya? Ghissi pitti pic? Both men in the pic are dead...and probably the standing one too is dead.
Always spewing hatred against Sunni Muslims, you should be the last person to give a lecture on stereotyping.
As for Indians, the dental surgery I go to is run by North Indian dentists (muslims) , they are well educated and respectful people. So may be this perverted attitude is common only among the lower working class non-muslims. But then how come South India has far less crimes rate than North?
LOL.. Stereotype all North Indians as rapists ok, stereotype all UK Pakistanis as extremists and potential terrorists bad...
From personal experience, i have found all Pakistanis living in the UK to be extremists... Dont be offended, its just personal experience.
Personal experience doesnt validate stereotypical views, since you simply couldn't have met enough North Indians and Bengalis to draw a statistically valid conclusion on any level.
But whatever, its human nature to draw broad conclusion from limited data. We all do it, its how we evolved to survive uncertainty.
Poor woman probably had this romantic notion of India from PBS, travel brochures, and bollywood swirling around in her head... Oh look, a friendly Indian truck driver offering me a lift, what could possibly go wrong!
Unfortunately, a lady was raped. Which was a terrible thing to happen. All the blame goes to the rapists. Period.
Deriding other "truck drivers" in general and trying to deflect blame here to the victim for accepting a ride from truck drivers doesn't strike to me as a very reasonable response. I don't know about every country but in the US at least, truck drivers are considered normal people just like everyone else, going about their lives, making an honest living like other folks around. There are not even negative stereotypes or horror stories about them or their conduct. I am not a woman so I am not privy to the instincts a woman may have. I would guess though that again at least in the US if someone is ok with accepting a ride from a guy driving a Corolla or a Lexus they would also be fine with accepting one from a someone driving a truck because there truck drivers are just like other normal folks.

lol... You want us to lay off truck drivers!
How about you not get into a ANY strangers vehicle, at any hour of the day in ANY country in the world, regardless of what sex you happen to be.
No ones justifying rape, but common sense should be used to avoid it.
Perhaps. I think personally I would not have any qualms accepting a ride but to each his own. As long as we are not stereotyping hard-working poor truck drivers in general, I am good. LOL.
Disgusting. Seriously, the way Indian men here in Mid-east look at women (even the covered ones) is quite disturbing. I don't know what is wrong with them?
hmmm...it is not just the Indian men...when I lived there...I had men from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Arabs....they all stare and and generally like to be sleaze bags! When I use to take walks on the beach side over there..I always made sure that I had my iPod full blast so that I wouldn't hear a word that they said...coz after a few years..all you want to do is to tell them where to go in plain english..coz they don't seem to understand when you make a request politely.
Not all of them are like that...coz out of the blue you will find a few who are absolute gentlemen!
I think the only men I had no issues with were the westerners....

Too right ... Usually a romantic notion of a country does not include the locals ... It is often limited to the geography and architecture.

I'm not saying all Indians are like this...I'm saying my personal experience with all Indians is like this.

Well, I would reluctantly have to agree with you despite being a Pakistani male. Desi women are all to familiar with and have always complained, as far back as i can remember, about the sleaze desi men, whether its Desi land, UK or the US. Men stare. I remember in High school, the girls hated walking through the Pakistani area, and so would always walk in a group.
Perhaps im being insensitive seeing as how i have never had any men flirt with me, with the exception of a few Gay dudes here in the US.. .
It might sound racist…but I have nothing against Pakistani women who reside in UK . It’s just the pervy ones that disgust me. Unfortunately, a lot of them happen to be pervs. Again, may be it’s a social status thing. Educated ones are pretty decent people. People who take help of others to post on GS are not to be classified as educated.
I said based on my personal experience with people here at GS…there is nothing to get offended.
What does my personal opinion make me. Thinking helps
I am surprised by some of the dismissive comments especially by indian nationalists, what exactly is the indian government doing about this terrible epidemic of young girls and women being raped?
Did you understand the intent behind the post… pathetic
If you do not understand, please say so I will explain. First let me suggest you something. Read my post carefully and compare my post to yours. It will help you to understand.

Please read statistics and do a good comparison to understand if it is indeed an epidemic. That said, the govt has already brought forth a bill to counter the menace.
