Re: Allowing International Businesses to enter local markets ..
You can't say that, Pakistan has people who don't get paid at all for their work, bonded labour. So you can't say that.
Effectively that is happening in the UAE too. People take huge loans to get a visa and pay for the flight. And then they end up working day in and out for a significant part of the 3 years their contract is valid for, in order to pay that loan back.
Re: Allowing International Businesses to enter local markets ..
I've read about how unfair that place is. How laborers are forced to live outside the city in Dubai. And there being no route to citizenship is most unfair thing ever. The immigrants can't affect the local laws if they're not allowed to acquire citizenship.
Re: Allowing International Businesses to enter local markets ..
the conditions that labourers work in remain intolerable and beyond imagination .. Can you believe me, few years back I was doing some research and managed to visit one of the quarters and they had literally 30 men staying in a tiny room .. the beds were stocked one on top of the other with very little head space in between , It was suffocating as hell .. the conditions were seriously disgusting ..
and many dont even get paid at all .. their passports are with the sponsors and they dont have the money for the tickets to go back ..
thats the real truth of the "modern" world that Dubai is !
but even in general, the kind of lifestyle that people live in Pakistan, is a whole lot better then what we see in the UAE .. keeping in mind that pakistan is a much larger country then UAE ..
Re: Allowing International Businesses to enter local markets ..
perhaps Saeed, thats also true, I havnt seen Pakistan and I am talking only with knowledge that is limited to seeing some people earn loads of money ! they arent even as qualified enough !

Hmm. You should check out the poverty and literacy numbers for Pakistan.
The people making loads of money over here are a minority and a lot of them make money by taking bribes or working the system some other way.
Re: Allowing International Businesses to enter local markets ..
so what do you think, as a consumer and loyal to your country, would you want your government to allow international big shots to enter your local markets? are the gains bigger then the losses? or do you think that although they employ many thousands of people , it is unclear whether collectively they are net creators or destroyers of employment?
Its a tricky question. I wouldn't generalize my response for all industries. If it is for FMCG products, allowing international chains enter into the country might be fatal for the economy. If its any luxury product which has a niche, I'd be in favor of that. That niche has the buying power and is going to spend money which eventually is going abroad anyway and if someone in my country benefits from the whole process (in terms of investment and employment) I wouldn't question business' existence in the country.
