Without a shadow of a doubt, De Niro. I can't stand Scarface fanboys (mind you, I love the movie too) who regard Pacino the greatest actor based on that movie. De Niro is much, much more versatile. From playing an insecure boxer in Raging Bull to a vulnerable Vietnam veteran in Deer Hunter to a neurotic comedian in The King of Comedy to a mentally unstable taxi driver in Taxi Driver; the guy has done it all. No other actor can boast of a resume filled with such diverse roles punctuated with such brilliant performances. I'm a big fan of Pacino and he is an equally talented actor in his own right, but it peeves me off when people think of his hammed up speeches at the end of every movie as intensity personified. Forget Scarface for a while, and try watching some of De Niro's work from the 70's and 80's. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.

Great performance by Pacino, but I’ll take a “Are you talkin’ to me” over “Hoo haa” any day. Any day I tell you :o .
