KARACHI: Shahid Afridi on Saturday rubbished Shoaib Akhtar’s claims that he provoked the fast bowler. “Everybody knows Shoaib and how he is,” Afridi said. “He is trying to save his own neck by blaming me for that unfortunate incident but I’m not worried because he is lying,” added Afridi who said that he has explained his side of the story to top PCB officials.

Afridi was referring to a dressing room brawl that ended with Shoaib hitting fellow pacer Mohammad Asif with a cricket bat after a net session in Johannesburg.

Afridi claimed that he was the one who protected Asif from ‘really serious injuries’. “Shoaib had become so violent that he could have done anything had I not intervened,” he said adding that Asif could have been in worse shape had Shoaib not been stopped.

Meanwhile, conflicting reports are surfacing on the fate of Mohammad Asif. While the team management is insisting that he is fine, a source close to Asif told ‘The News’ that the medium pacer is carrying a serious thigh injury.
