This is already underway. All 800 passengers will be required to pedal. Come on Grandama!

Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
Airbus has twice the range of the Dreamliner.
And I am sure Airbus made its homework before designing the A380.
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
“Airbus has twice the range of the Dreamliner.”
Wrong.
A380 Range:
A380-800 - Max cruising speed M 0.88. Long range cruising speed M 0.85. Range 14,800km (8,000nm). Service ceiling 43.000ft (13,100m).
A380-800F - Range 10,370km (5,600nm).
The three Dreamliner variants:
The baseline version, the 7E7, has a maximum take-off weight of 205,400kg. The aircraft typically accommodates 200 passengers in a three-class cabin configuration. The length is 56m. The wingspan is 58.8m and the height is 17.4m. The range is 14,445km.
The 7E7-SR short-range version is the same length and height as the 7E7 but has a shorter wingspan (51.5m). The maximum take-off weight is 136,075kg and the range is reduced to 6,480km.
The stretched version, 7E7-STR, has the same wingspan and height as the standard 7E7 but the length is increased by 6m to 62m. The aircraft carries typically 250 passengers in a two-class cabin layout. The range is increased to 15,370km and the maximum take-off weight is 223,000kg.
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
woops a mistake on my part ![]()
I guess I missread somewhere.
But the 7E7 isnt competition for the A380 but for the A350 series.
True the 7E7 uses state of the art technology and the A350 is based on a 15 year old model but is well known and one doesnt need to put crew etc. thru new courses to get familiar with everything.
Now it basically depends on which aircraft will earn back the money the quickest.
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
Now that a few months have passed and maybe passions are running low, what really is in the future of A-380?
With Air India & Air Canada buying from boeing, I just thought it will be good to get this topic back up.
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
Air Canada and Air India are considered as B and C class airlines, respectively. Boeing has some very big names under their belt. But A-380 is admired and ordered by only the top players in the airways. Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Air France and Lufthansa are the few to name here. Yes no American as expected, but ask yourself these airlines are considered as trend setters and the best in service. So down the road in 10 years, we might see PIA flying A-350 KHI-NYC route. No? The fuel economy and expected increase in passenger load will push big nations and routes (china, india, pakistan,EMEA and fareast) will require it for long routes, such as to North America.
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
smooth yar, it is all good and dandy but is the world ready for it? We all know the world wasn't ready for the Concord until much later. And I am sure in a few decades we all be lovin a A-380 but right now the market seems far less upbeat.
I work for a company that came up with the idea of a machine that can copy, print and scan at the same time in the 80s. They have a prototype of it in their museum. Guess how many did they sell?
So, while I am all impressed by this big jumbo jet, I don't know how many will actually get to fly in it and by when? What are the most common routes that this jet is targeting? How are the airlines you mentioned doing financially? In US most companies have too many planes and not enough passengers.
And what will happen if Boeing comes up with a hybrid plane?
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
I think you have to look at the Airline market, not the planes. The US market has eveloved extremely quickly. 12 years ago the way to go was to have "hubs" in strategic parts of the country and fly big planes between the hubs. That frequently meant flying froma secondary city to the hub, to another secondary, two or three hops for a business traveller one way. Southwest and some others did away with the hub concept, standardized on one plane, and went direct from city to city. The overall efficeincy for the business flyer is much better.
So do China and India need huge long haul aircraft? Perhaps, for high profile routes. But as business expands beyond simply one or two key cities, more frequent flights with smaller efficient aircraft makes more sense. Airbus may sell a bunch of high volume long haul planes now, but the biggest part of the business will probably be Boeings. A comparison to the Concorde is apt, because high profile does not mean profitable. The Airbus is splashy, but if it really sells well, Boeing can aways jump in once the market is proven. This is a huge risk for the European taxpayer....
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
I think Europeons need to spend more on Airbus. In the next 20 years when we remove our security umbrella, and invade france, we will have huge planes to have parties in.
Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
Kingfisher of India has ordered 57 Planes from Airbus. By next year they will get 33-37 of them.
Air India has ordered Boeing in huge numbers.

A-380 did its first flight today. Does anyone have link to the video?

Airbus having second thoughts? Emirites, one of their biggest customer is definetly having second thoughts.
Airbus hikes A380 break-even mark
Qantas is one of the airlines frustrated by A380 delays
European aircraft maker Airbus has raised the number of A380 superjumbos it needs to sell to make a profit on the project.
The A380 programme has been beset by huge cost over-runs and long delays.
The firm’s parent company EADS now says it needs to sell 420 A380s to break even, up from a previous estimate of 270 aircraft.
To date, Airbus has sold 159 A380s and the first plane is now due in October 2007 - two years behind schedule.

Re: Airbus A380: Biggest-ever passenger plane unveiled
Yep it’s a nightmare alright!
I’m actually using the various A380 snafus over 2005-2006 period as a case study in my MBA Operations Management course.
From project management issues related to difficulties in installing electrical wiring systems resulting in ETA delays (bad critical path estimations) to capacity planning problems related to break-even volumes... I have a feeling that we’re yet to see a more murky view of this story.
