India firm favourites for 2011 World Cup: Imran Khan
NEW DELHI: India will be the overwhelming favourites to win next year’s World Cup with home advantage and an ideal build-up on tour in South Africa, Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan said. “India is easily the favourite team, going by their form and depth both in bowling and batting,” the former Pakistani all-rounder told reporters on Thursday after the broadcasting arrangements for the 2011 tournament were announced. “I think the South Africa tour will do them good. The tougher is the tour, the better prepared you are for the World Cup.” India will contest three Test matches in South Africa starting on Dec. 16 followed by a Twenty20 and five one-dayers before heading home to prepare for tournament starting on Feb. 19 hosted by themselves, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. India are ranked number one Test team by the ICC (International Cricket Council) and the number two one-day international (ODI) side behind holders Australia. “India are the favourite team and Sri Lanka are close second. They will also have home advantage, which matters a lot,” Imran added. Australia beat Sri Lanka in the final to clinch the last World Cup in the Caribbean and 1996 winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga said his compatriots should again do well. “Sri Lanka are one of the favourites. They have built a good team but my only worry is their middle order,” said the portly Sri Lankan, whose astute captaincy fashioned the team’s stunning 1996 World Cup victory over the Australians. “In 1996, we had a strong middle order. But of course this team has better bowlers and both (Muttiah) Muralitharan and (Lasith) Malinga are match-winning bowlers,” he added. reuters

Aamer more talented than Wasim: Imran Khan
Pakistan cricket is facing its biggest crisis and the team stand little chance of winning the 2011 World Cup without fast bowlers Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif, former captain Imran Khan said on Thursday. Unable to host international cricket due to the volatile security situation at home, Pakistan suffered another blow when Aamir and Asif and former Test captain Salman Butt were suspended by the International Cricket Council following allegations of spot-fixing in the fourth Test against England this year.
Wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider then left the squad in Dubai last month and fled to London, seeking asylum and saying he was being threatened by people who wanted him to co-operate in fixing matches. “Cricket in Pakistan faces its biggest crisis and so does the country,” Imran told reporters.
“Sadly, the patron of the Pakistan Cricket Board is the president (of the country) and the less I say of him, the better,” said the cricketer-turned-politician. “We are in a mess. We have the talent but we want to know the verdict on Asif and Aamir. “They are arguably the best opening pair of bowlers…I have seen both Wasim Akram and Aamir and I can tell you Aamir is ahead of what Wasim was at this age…Without those two, our bowling is not potent,” added Imran, whose charismatic captaincy was crucial in securing Pakistan’s only World Cup triumph in 1992.
The former all-rounder, however, has not lost all hope of a turnaround. “Pakistan’s ODI captain Shahid Afridi is someone, probably the only one, who can pull off something out of the ordinary. Pakistan have their back against wall,” Imran said. “Afridi is unpredictable. If he can hit a purple patch – in one-dayers you need just two quality batsmen to hit a purple patch and rest can rally around. “Pakistan are very unpredictable but it’s not the best of time,” he said. reuters
