Afghanistan

MS, I don’t doubt your knowledge about military affairs, but how much of it was done openly? Everything was done under the table and clandestinely…

The American government openly supports the rogue state of Israel, how many Muslim countries supported Afghanistan openly, a country which was wrongfully under occupation? With money, arms and ammunition? At least I don’t remember any if anything like that happened…

The Ummah is in such a pathetic state of affairs we can’t even openly mourn or cheer our losses and victories…First we were scared of USSR, now it’s USA tomorrow we’ll be cowering from some other enemy…How saddening and depressing…

Indeed beautiful …thanks for your efforts to share them here bhai :flower1:

Support was not done openly for a number of reasons, which varied by country.

In the case of most arab countries, for example, which were dependent on the Soviet Union for arms, governments were aware that openly (or even covertly) backing the Afghans would lead to their arms supply and thus ability to defend themselves being turned off. More to the point, most of these countries had strictly anti-Islamist governments at the time that cracked down on any kind of religiously motivated militants (i.e Egypt, Turkey, Syria, North African countries).

The more religiously orientated (and American orientated) Sunni Muslim states in the Gulf were reluctant to overtly support the Mujahideen because of the Iran-Iraq war going on, where they were hoping that Sunni-led Iraq would crush Shia Iran. The Soviet Union was relatively neutral in that conflict, but the Gulf Arabs feared that should they officially back the Mujahedin, then the Soviet Union would provide military backing to enable Iran and thus the Shias would take over the whole of the Gulf. In view of the sectarian tension in the region following Khomeini's takeover, these states were prioritising the containment of Shia Islam over all else.

Iran, similarly, though considering the Soviet Union to be the Lesser Satan, did not want to back the Mujahedin, becase all of their country's resources were focused on fighting off the Iraqi attack in the West, and they literally had nothing which which to defend themselves against a Soviet attack out of Afghanistan.

Pakistan was the country that came closest to overt official support, as the Soviet Union knew full well (through torture of captured Mujahedin) how much support Pakistan weas giving. However, the ISI had a policy that not a single shred of evidence that Pakistan supported the Mujahedin should ever enter Afghanistan, and so the Soviets never had solid proof. For example, all guns and ammunition given to the Mujahedin had all Pakistani markings removed. Pakistani Army (ISI) personnel sent to Afghanistan to guide the Mujahedin were warned that should they be captured, they would be disowned by Pakistan. Whilst suicide was obviously out of the question, they were instructed that should they be captured or their capture appear likely, then they should take actions that would lead to their own death (such as attacking men who are armed with guns). Dead men can't be tortured into giving the Soviet Union proof.

The reason for the overt support becomes obvious because, following the 1986 attacks by Mujahideen inside the Soviet Union, Pakistan was officially warned that should there be any more attacks by Mujahideen anywhere inside the Soviet Union, then the Warsaw Pact would declare war on Pakistan. Pakistan lacked the air, land and sea resources to be able to avoid Soviet military occupation, and lacked the delivery equipment to take its limited nuclear arsenal at the time anywhere meaningful in the Soviet Union.

A military occupation would have left Pakistan and Afghanistan at the mercy of communists, given that it would have denied the Mujahedin any kind of safe refuge.

^^ Thanks for the link MS…I will find time to read it after Ramadan, InshAllah…:k:

Your commentary was much appreciated and informative, however, for me as a Muslim it still remains a mark on shame upon a people (Ummah) that spans more than half the globe with a following of almost 1.6 billion people and we stood by not being able to openly fight off Russia from its domain…Strategy my a$$, the Muslims should have blindly sided with the Mujahideen and political pressure applied on the Russians to leave or face extinction…

This is pathetic MS…We are so defenseless…:frowning: What the heck happened? All the signs of Qiyyamah are coming true…So many Muslims and each one scared…Not from Allah, but what America will do if we don;t side with…The Muslims’s free spirit and independence is held hostage at the point of a cruise missile made by McDonnell Douglas…:frowning:

Why did we become so weak? And the mod-Muslims are still not satisfied…They still want us to get rid of our weapons so the Crusaders can really have a field day with our faith, our honor and our respect…

May Allah :swt: curse those who sell their brothers in faith to gain benefit…Muslims have become cannibals Astaghfirullah, living off their brothers’ flesh…:frowning:

Guns aside..the only hi tech equipment provided to the Mujahadeen were stingers and the British Equivalent of them, one can't discount personal bravery during the war, the much maligned Ahmed Shah Masood..successfully repuled repeated Russian attacks..and he was cut off from Pakistani Military Supplies. Similarly abdul haq...infiltrated right into Russian Military bases and planted bombs...

Its the same story in Chechnya, Kashmir and other Muslim Lands. In fact the Muslims are the most oppressed people in the world, mostly by their own governments!

Ameen Ya Rabb

u are good lookin Afghanistan.... too bad when i came i didnt saw u in ur full glory...still when i see a Soviet made landmine i think of Afghanistan...Allah restore it to her formar glory....

**batameez, ullujii, sweetpie, Islamabad,
thanks guys I was stunned too when I saw these because
this is not the same Afghanistan that we have seen in our
time :(

ramyssysIX, yes nothing but ruins now :(

Lajawab, every ruler in every day and age has
his own share of traitors. As far as declaring
the aid to Afghans not being declared openly, everyone
knew about it whether the government of Pakistan
said so officially or not. The border was open
and an uncountable number fled to the other
side of the border towards Pakistan during the war. There
isn't one Pakistani city where you won't find Afghan
refugees today. Though many have settled abroad now,
but Pakistan did give them the escape route from
their war-torn homeland, the refuge to sit and
take a breath, and the passage to settle abroad
with bright futures for themselves and their families.
There are many many Afghans settled poshly in
prestigious parts of Europe and North America today.

And the thing about the Ummah, it won't get
better until everyone does their own part in
putting Allah and His Commands foremost before
anything else. There is a bigger jihad than the
one that's played out on the field, and this
jihad is the struggle within our own selves.
That has to be conquered mastered by ourselves
before we help anyone else. So either
we can keep bickering at each other like we
have for many centuries or make a decision
right away to make every day count as a Muslim
from our inner selves for that is where Jihad begins
and when we die jihad ends.

mAd_ScIeNtIsT, good points

Ibn Sadique, many thanks and welcome.

little human, my pleasure

KrazyKhan, few have seen it in its full glory before
the war. Ameen to your dua of Afghanistan
restoring its glory.

Face extinction with what? In the 1979-1988 period, the armies of the Muslim world combined paled compared to the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies. More to the point, the Soviet Union had sufficient nuclear weapons to exterminate half the world, whilst the Muslim world had virtually none, and certainly had no means to deliver them to the Soviet Union.

Between the Muslim world and the Soviet Union, the only party that had the physical capacity to exterminate the other was the Soviet Union

Well, if you look at the beginning of the 17th century, the Muslims were arguably the most powerful people on the planet. There were two Muslim states, friendly to each other, that probably comprised the most powerful nations in the world., and included most of the world's Muslim population. The Ottoman Empire, which represented conservative Islam, and the Mughal Empire, which though incredibly powerful, embodied the worst elements of today's "mod Muslims".

The fall of the two is very different. The Mughal Empire, which existed on the basis of comprimised Islam values (they were VERY liberal about sexual morals, etc), disintegrated, for a range of reasons. Shah Jehan bankrupted the nation making the Taj Mahal, Emperor Aurangzeb's draconian policies towards Hindus and Shias provoke many rebellions, whilst subsequent weak rulers could not stem the tide of Muslim states breaking away as the state's ability to enforce its authority waned. Eventually, these new Muslim states did not really collaborate and instead tried to play the British off against each other.... leading to their takeover, one by one, by Britain. The disaster that came is that Britain witheld industrialisation from taking hold in India, making all the peoples of the area, including the Muslims, incapable of competing with the industrialised West and made them economically and militarily inferior.

The Ottoman Empire's story, however, is the story of the heart of the Muslim world, and how the Muslims fell to where they are today. It's a combination of society breaking away from holding fast to Islam, of poor leadership, and of misguided ulema hampering the nation rather than leading it to glory.

As I mentioned, during the 1600s the Ottoman Empire was the most powerful nation in Europe and the Mediterranean. However, its strength (like America's today) came from its economic might. The Ottoman Empire sat on the trade route between Europe and Asia and made huge revenue from taxing traders in its land. This money was used to build the Empire and maintain its army and navy. By contrast, Europe's economy was based mainly on trade.

When the Europeans managed to circumnavigate Africa, they discovered that this would enable them to trade with Asia without having to pay the Ottomans. The Ottoman Empire found itself coming under economic hardship, whilst the morals of its citizens chipped away and corruption, etc, became rife. The morale standard eventually degraded to such an extent that homosexuality was pretty rife by the beginning of the 1900s!!!

The bonds of Muslim brotherhood were being weakened too, as in many lands Arabs found themselves being oppressed by Turks (a hatred that lasts till today amongst many). The collapsing economy made it difficult for the Ottomans to maintain their military might, and from the 1700s to the mid 1800s, they suffered defeat after defeat, surrendering huge swathes of Muslim lands to Russia.

By the 1800s, the Ottoman Empire was considered the Sick Man of Europe. Its army was so weak that it relied often on British and French support against Russia, such as in the Crimean War of the 1850s. European support came at a price - the Ottomans were forced to make many concessions to Britain and France to avoid being overwhelmed by Russia. For example, European quarters were built in Istanbul (complete with bars, etc). The Ottomans were forced to give autonomy to Lebanon's Christians, and many more.

Compounding the Muslim world problems was the fact that as Istanbul found it could not finance the maintainance of its authority, all over the Empire, regional rulers broke away from Ottoman rule, and often were promptly gobbled up by Europeans. For example, in 1831, the Bey of Al-Jazeer (the ruler of Algeria), who acted independently of Istanbul despite nominal loyalty to the Khalif there, slapped the French Ambassador across the face with a fly swatter. The Ambassador left, and returned with an army to avenge the insult. The Ottoman Empire was unable to afford to defend Algeria, and so began over 130 years of brutal French rule.

In the mid 1800s, a number of Sultans recognised that economically and militarily, the Muslim world (by that stage really only consisting of the Ottoman Empire, the remaining Muslim lands mainly colonised by Europe) lagged well behind Europe and needed to catch up. But here, misguided conservative ulema dogged almost every move. Even something as inoccuous as ordering that the army should have a uniform was fought by the ulema. The scholars decreed that a characteristic of the armies of the kuffar was that they wore uniforms, and Muslims should not emulate the kuffar. A similar stance was taken when the Sultan tried to introduce the bayonet.

A more critical problem was that the Sultans recognised the need to bring the Industrial Revolution to the Ottoman Empire. At that stage, almost all education was madrassah based. Students would get a very firm grasp of Islam, as well as and education in other classical madrassah subjects such as mathematics and philosophy. However, these skills did not equip society for Industrialisation. One of the Sultans attempted to order the madrassahs to lower the Islam content so that students could also learn sciences and engineering, but this was opposed by ulema who did not want to change curriculums that had proven reliable for centuries.

Whilst some progress was eventually made, it was too little too late. By 1914, the Ottomans were still not a fully industrialised society, the Empire was one of the poorest countries in Europe, the armed forces were poorly equipped.

The lost opportunity is nearly scandalous. In 1850, Japan was absolutely primitive in comparison to the Ottomans (Japan was virtually a 1st century society in terms of technology, economy, etc). By 1905, Japan was one oof the most powerful countries in the world and had inflicted a crushing defeat on Russia, one of the world's most powerful nations. If only the Ottomans could have followed the Japanese example :(

However, all was still not lost in 1914. After all, progress had been made into modernising the Ottoman society, and with German help and weapons, the Ottoman army was being trained to be a modern fighting force.

World War 1 was the nail in the coffin to Muslim might. The decision to join the war on the German side against the Ottoman's traditional ally, the British, proved to be disasterous. The bulk of the Muslim military strength was sent on a disasterous winter campaign against Russia in 1914, where it was roundly defeated. Only Russia's revolution stopped a disasterous Russian takeover of the Empire.

Despite brave and stubborn resistance by Muslim troops in Iraq and Gallipoli, British and French troops forced the Sultan into accepting a humiliating peace that included putting Istanbul, the capital of the Muslim world, into a city under "International control", and ceding Palestine. Large areas of Turkey were simply given away to Greece.

Mustafa Ataturk rallied the remaining (now exclusively Turkish) troops of the Ottoman Army and forced Britain and France to revise the peace settlement to be more in Turkey's favour. However, Ataturk had no interest in Islam, and made no effort to reclaim the lost lands nor restore Muslim might.

By this stage, the whole of the Muslim world was militarily insignficant, divided, rules by outsiders and most importantly, economically underdeveloped preventing us from being able to challenge the Western nations that to this day dominate the world.

^^ Thanks MS, that was very informative and detailed…Thanks for taking the time out to write all that…Im really appreciate it…:k:

Aalhan, I agree, although that ‘inner jihad’ thing is not even a Hadith as it’s attributed to some Ashaba-e-karaam…And what does your nick mean?

I am copying & pasting part of an article from a Website which promises great coming events for Afghanistan.

“In a tradition narrated by Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) the Prophet (pbuh) talked of a person who shall appear from Mawarah-al-Nar (Trans-Oxus). He shall be known as Haris. At the forefront of his (Haris) army shall be another person who people shall speak of as Mansoor. Mansoor shall provide assistance and provisions and a kingdom for the Prophet's (pbuh) family as was provided to the Prophet (pbuh) by the Quraish of Makkah. It is incumbent (wajib), according to the tradition, for every Muslim to help and obey Mansoor (Abu Daud).

This hadith talks of a man spoken of as Mansoor, from Mawarah-al-Nar, which is a region in the west of Afghanistan - a part of Khurasan. Mansoor is an Arabic word which means one who is divinely helped or one who succeeds with divine help. Thus it transpires that a man blessed with divine aid, belonging to the same geographical region of Khurasan to which belongs the venerated Imam, shall provide refuge to the Prophet's (pbuh) family. While a whole multitude claims to be directly descendant from the Prophet (pbuh), who is it actually that can rightfully claim the Prophet's (pbuh) mantle? The one, of course, about whom the Prophet (pbuh) himself has said to be of his stock - none other than Imam Mahdi.

It is indeed most illuminating to note that all of the above traditions relate to Afghanistan and speak of the appearance of a group of people - Imam Mahdi, Haris and Mansoor, from the region of Khurasan and Mawarah-al-Nar who will have a prime role to play during the unfolding saga of the end times. It appears that Haris and Mansoor, would be key figures of Jamat-i-Mahdi - the group of Mahdi.

The jigsaw puzzle has then quite a few bits in place. We know that the Prophet's (pbuh) family from Hazrat Abbas's side migrated to Khurasan. We also know that Imam Mahdi shall be a Khurasani and a descendant of the Prophet (pbuh) from Hazrat Abbas's side. And as we have found out from the just quoted hadith, a person blessed with divine assistance - Mansoor, shall provide refuge and help to the Prophet's (pbuh) family. From these traditions, it is amply clear that the family of the Prophet (pbuh) which will be sheltered by Mansoor is none other than that of the Last Imam, Hazrat Imam Mahdi.

Mansoor, it would then appear, is a pivotal figure in the saga of the end times. This divinely helped person shall, according to the hadith, provide refuge and sanctuary to Hazrat Imam Mahdi and his family. This implies that there shall be some sort of turmoil that will necessitate that the Imam, his family and his followers be provided protection. That this guardianship is provided by Mansoor is an indication of his spiritual and worldly stature that he is able to act as the sentinel for one of the most exalted figures of the nation of Islam.

In yet another tradition, the Prophet (pbuh) talked of a great army of seventy thousand soldiers from Hindustan that shall wage a Holy War and assist Imam Mahdi, when he makes his much awaited appearance at the Holy Kaabah. Who shall lead this army? None other than the one who, as his name implies, is divinely helped - Mansoor. The army shall, according to the tradition, put the rulers of Hindustan in fetters and victory is destined for them. The soldiers of this army shall be absolved of all sins and on their return from the Holy Land, they shall find Hazrat Issa (AS) in Syria (Abu Daud). Again, this tradition talks of a crucial and indeed a high profile role that Mansoor shall play in the days to come. Maybe it would be more fruitful to look for this exalted figure that shall lead us to the proximity of the Great Imam.”

.

About around 1500A.D. Iran was a Sunni Majority area until the population was ‘converted’ to Shia majority by sheer force of arms. So, Insha’Allah this area will revert back to what it was.

Below I have given the evidence which I am ‘cut & pasting from the web.

“The first large, lasting Shi'ite state was the Safavid state in Iran. The Safavids were originally a Turkish Sufi order; Sufism is a mystical branch of Sunni Islam. The leaders of this movement, the tariqa , passed on this leadership through hereditary means. The Safavids, then, were a kind of hereditary mystical spiritual authority.

*In the fifteenth century, the Safavids converted to Shi'ism and evolved a militant theology that demanded the supremacy of Shi'ism through force of arms. *

These militant Safavids claimed to be the direct descenedants of the seventh Imam. As their influence grew, they converted many Turks in Iran, Syria, and Anatolia.

Isma'il Claiming to be the Representative of the Hidden Imam, Isma'il, a young Safavid master, expanded Safavid control over much of Iran, Mesopotamia (Iraq), Azerbaijan, and the Caucusus south of Russia by 1506 AD. He had assumed control of the Safavids in 1494 AD / 900 AH (at the age of seven!), and appears to have gained a fanatical following by not only calling himself the representative of the Hidden Imam, but by claiming to be the Hidden Imam himself (later he would claim divinity).

His followers believed that the Hidden Imam had returned and that they were soldiers in the forces of righteousness. Their victory, which was certain, would inaugurate a period of world-wide justice and spirituality.

In 1499 (at the age of twelve!), Isma'il led his army in a war of conquest. In 1500, he conquered the kingdom of Shirvan, and in 1501, he was crowned King of Tabriz (at the age of fourteen). He then declared Shi'a Islam to be the state religion of Tabriz.

By 1512, he controlled all of Iran. Adopting Persian models of government and bureaucracy, Isma'il declared himself Shah of Iran and became the first Shah of the Safavid dynasty.

He enforced Shi'ism on everyone; at the time, Sunni Muslims vastly outnumbered Shi'ites in Iran. He forced them to curse the first three Caliphs and to be ruled under the Shi'ite ulama . Here's a surprise. He succeeded. His efforts to turn Iran into a Shi'ite population was remarkably successful, and Iran to this day is almost entirely Shi'ite.”

Anyway we should leave the Shia/Sunni issue out of this nice thread before it turns out into a riot; rather we should enjoy the beauty of Afghanistan.

wonderfull information and pictures…
thanx Alhaan, Ms and others…
:flower1:

Uncle Lajawab, that war turned tides, as soon as the Mujaheedins got the Stingers from the US. My uncle (now a brig in the Pak Army) went to the US and used to get training on its operation, and then used to come back and train the Mujahideen. To say that the Mujahideen won this war merely because they were Muslims is very absurd. Oh, and btw, these are the same Mujahideen that were considered bad Muslms later on, by the people who supported the Taliban, so playing the religious angle with them wont really work.

**

:mash: That makes so much sense…

So Mullah Omar, Osama Bin Laden, Ayman-al-Zawahiri and the countless hundreds of Taliban fighters killed and hunted were not part of the Mujahideen who ousted Russians? You mean to tell me that hundreds of Arab fighters were in Afghanistan since the 80s to sell lemonade to Afghans…Great…

And Stingers were also used against the ground forces that invaded Afghanistan…That makes a lot of sense too…

Brother, you underestimate faith like many did before you…Our Prophet :saw: is proof what one man can do if he is a true Muslim…Afghans won the war because the help of Allah :swt: was with them, not because they had Stingers and help from the States or Pakistan…

Also described in Brigadier Yousef's book is how American, British, Saudi and Pakistani funding was used to purchase guns, rockets, anti-tank weapons, etc from China to arm the Mujahedin so they could fight against the Soviets and Communist Afghan forces. Their war would have been unsustainable without the outside help they received from both Muslims and non-Muslims, as they would have lacked the firepower needed. Until around 1982, when foreign aid enabled the Mujahideen to be armed with modern weaponry, they were attempting to fight the soviets with guns that in some cases nearly 100 years old, and suffered tremendous casualties and hardly any victories. Until the arrival of Stingers enabled the Mujahedin to make deeper and stronger raids into communist-held areas, the modern weapons they recieved were simply enough to stave off defeat. Soviet total control of the air was that strong a factor in the war, until the Stingers took that away from them.

There was a phrase common amongst the Mujahedin in the pre-Stinger era quoted by Brigadier Yousef: "We are not afraid of the Soviets, but we are afraid of their helicopters".

Though you can't at all deny the role of Allah SWT's help in their struggle... Brigadier Yousef, a religious man himself, clearly makes that point. The ordeals that the Mujahedin successfully went through, and the resolve they displayed in battles against horrific odds, attests to the favour that must surely have been upon them from Allah SWT.

[/QUOTE]

Taliban did not exist at that time... the Arab mujahideen helped the local mujahideen in ousting russia,, however they turned on each other in fight for power, this power vaccuum forced another group to rally on reasoning the strongest people in afghanistan who were trained for warefare,, the Arab/foreign fighters.... then the group imposed itself upon the rest of the people by force... (and as it would see itself,, by necessity)

anyway

mad_scintest the problem you describe is similar to Iraq situation

a total victory by russia (and in this new case America) will never be achieved,,

but yes mujahideen have to work harder for an outright victory. and the mujahideen meaning muslims... which means the doctors, the engineers and (the technical experts) as well as the foot soldier...

However again, Russia (and new case America) could never have gained, and never will gain an outright victory either..This is because there is absolutely no way to defend against the undefendable (i.e. when a soldier simply goes into an defeatable area to cause maximum damage without hesitation to give his life, and even often takes his own life as a form of offensive weapon).

It is a stalemate situation.

Simply stunning pictures. It's sad to see the state of affairs that Afghanistan is today. Hopefully, one day it will return to the gorgeous country it once was.
