been there, done that. In addition to all ER etc cost, paid almost 45k to US social security over time and I am not going to get a dime back but hey its the law. Abide it, fight it or leave the land - cheating govt and others is not an option.
Sometimes therez actually a big hole in the system. the biggest example is Social security in USA. I have been paying for SS for a while but i know am not getting it back ! Who is criminal in this act ?
Lemme add another example that really bothers me.
Back in 2007, i had to go to ER and i didnt have insurance, I was billed 20% of the expense and 80% was instantly taken off because i didnt have insurance. So I paid 20% which i didnt have to pay, i cud have worked around.
Anyway bottom line is i paid 20% to go to ER without insurance.
Now i pay 266 dollars every 4 weeks for insurance and yet when i go to ER i have to pay $ 100 first, $ 250 deductible and later on 20% coz insurance only pays 80%. Really funny !

Okay here is a strange question.
What if they(either gov or the family) decides to sue me after three year and at that point.
1. I have lost the job so am living on unemployment
or
2. I am not in usa anymore
or
3. Am not in usa anymore but working for US gov.
1) Well, if you don't have any money at all, then there's nothing for anyone to take. In lawsuits, people generally comes after your incomes, assets....ANYTHING that will get them paid. So if you're unemployed and living on the streets, then you have nothing to worry about. HOWEVER....if you yourself are receving govt. assistance.....it gets tricky. I don't knoe enough details about that particular area to give you a definite answer. But understand that in lawsuits, they can come after assets (ie. house, car etc). If you have bank accounts....they can find that out too. So it's not as simple as you not having a job.
2) If you're not in the U.S. anymore....then again, no worries. Let the govt. and family sue you all they want.......if you're not here and have no assets here, then nothing to worry about.
3) Again....a very particular area. Not 100% sure BUT I would imagine that if they wanted to....they would be able to garnish your wages (since it's the govt. paying you....and you owe the govt. money). Again....you'd need to talk to a lawyer that actually specializes in this.
** Look, there are many what "IFs" that can come up.....you'd drive yourself insane trying to figure out each scenario. And no lawyer can give you definite answers b/c a lot of the outcome will depend on the circumstances at the time of the event (and of course, laws can change too!). Instead of focusing on all these potential scenarios......you really need to think about just how much you trust this family NOT to take advantage of your "help".
This might be material for another thread but the thought stems from the mention of loopholes, abiding by tax laws and not paying taxes on funds earned/collected.
Isn't avoiding paying taxes the same thing that corrupt politicians and senior officials have been doing in Pakistan?
Where has that gotten our country?
I pay a large amount in taxes and pension funds to the Canadian government. By the time that I am old enough to qualify for such pensions I am told that there willbe no funds left......does that justify not paying?
there is no justification for not paying tax or SS. I think i have paid more to us gov then what they have paid me already. However i am no one to judge such people as criminal as when i was in need, i worked for cash too.
I am justifying why I cant point fingers at those people.

May be you take a moulana with you to those cab drivers to tell them what evil awaits them if they do not pay their taxes . Still help fill AOS for their loved ones who have no say or hand in tax evasion of these cab drivers. The least those loved ones deserve is a chance to a good life and once they start paying their taxes and become a model citizen I hope Allah will forgive your misgivings of the past for this noble gesture.
lol @take moulana with you... I dont need to judge anyone, if they the owe me the tax money i can ask them for it. Its between them us gov and ALLAH. Inshallah i will do the AOS for them.
I am not sure if this is the rite forum for this thread.
I want to know what could go wrong if you sign affidavit of support for someone ? Lets say if i was to sing it for a friends family, could it hurt me later ? what are things i shld ask myself before signing that.
Thanks for help.
There's your answer
If this is for USCIS, It means that you will be responsible for paying the govt back if it comes to that. For instance, if the person is not making much money and they need to have medicaid, food stamps any of the govt related help programs you will get that bill and would have to pay that. The only question you need to ask yourself is if you see that happening. I have signed AOS for 4 families over the last 8 years but I havent had to pay anything yet.
I signed it once and took it back because I dont want to be held responsible for anything the person does in the future. Its too much of a liability.

why is this "judging"? (I seem to have such difficulty understanding this word and its uses.)
you are merely asking someone to follow the law of the land in which they reside.
obviously you are pious enough to go out of your way for a Muslim brother.....do you not expect that the brother be as pious?
I have already mentioned that in difficult times i myself worked for cash because i didnt find it wrong. Now either i am not pious enough and if i am then i cant claim he isnt. Judging is making a decision whether someone is rite or wrong. I can do it for myself but for others i wud rather not.
On the side note, for AOS what does the person need. Tax copies for three years ? Pay Stabs and Neutralization Certificate ?

job employment letter/pay stub/last three years of tax copies/not sure about citizenship certificate.
I sort of understand what you mean.......how can you expect from him what you were not able to do yourself........whatever the circumstances may be.....
good luck with your endeavour......may Allah reward you for your neeyat.
So we spent so much time on this but the lawyer didnt accept my AOS b/c my last years income wasnt enough and thats what counts since this years income will only show on tax return next year.
