Advance Centres for Mechatronics Engineering to be set up

KARACHI: The Ministry of Science and Technology has decided to set up Advance Centres for Mechatronics Engineering claiming that it would immensely catalyse the process of industrialisation.
“A committee on the subject - constituted by Federal Minister Incharge Ministry of Science and Technology, Professor Dr Atta-ur-Rahman - under Rector NUST, Lt General (Retd) Syed Shujaat Hussain has presented a plan which proposes the setting up of three different centres at National University of Science and Technology (NUST), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore and NED University, Karachi,” a press release of the ministry said on Wednesday.

Mechatronics is a multi-disciplinary technology behind the so-called smart components, systems and factories.

The release added that these centres would form clusters with research and development units and industries in the discipline of mechatronics engineering.

**Under the plan, the NUST will form cluster with Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL), PAC Kamra, NDC, AWC, RASTGAR, East and West Infinite (Pvt) Ltd and the NED University with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), automobiles sector and other engineering industries in Karachi and the Sindh province.

In addition, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) located in Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat and other areas of Punjab would also collaborate with higher educational institutions.**

Commenting on the need for setting up of these centres, Professor Dr Atta-ur-Rahman remarked that since industrialisation is the key to development, therefore his ministry is preparing a comprehensive plan to take all steps required for rapid industrialisation of the country.

“In this regard, plans are being prepared to set up 11 national institutions in key areas of technology which will immensely catalyse industrialisation,” Dr Atta said.

Another visionary step from Dr. Atta. Hopefuly this will bring further impetus to the engineering sector in Pakistan. Pres. Musharraf’s commitment to the engineering sector is well known. But whats most important is that they are partnering with KRL, and auto sector. The partnership with auto sector should help us to produce more home-grown car parts. Great news :jhanda:

this is first time some one shaking the age old structure and giving some life to R&D in the country.

just wondering why massive PCSIR labs arent improved or re structured to already setup facilities. Last time I visited the one in lahore, people are getting paid for doing nothing at all, there was not a single research going on.

all the equipment was there but no research or development.

Something need to be done to utilize these facilities.
