India piles up 300 for 8 against Lanka in opening match
Kolkata, Monday, 22 December 2003
A brilliant century by opener Gautam Gambhir and 71 from Mohammad Kaif helped India ‘A’ to pile up 300 for eight in the opening match of the three-nation Kenstar Asian ‘A’ cricket tournament against Sri Lanka being played in Eden Gardens at Kolkata.
Electing to bat, India scored freely right from the beginning to post a challenging total for the Lankans. For the visitors, Kulasekara took two wickets for 50 runs
The hosts are led by stylish left hander Hemang Badani abd the team includes Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif and Sanjay Bangar.
Sri Lanka, led by Russel Arnold, also appear to have a strong squad with around five Test discards.
About the pressure of playing Pakistan, Indian skipper Badani said, “we are playing Pakistan at home after a long gap and we want to do well. So winning is at the top of our minds”.
“We have great respect for them and know we have a good contest on our hands,” he said of his rivals.
Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Sahid Afridi echoed, “We have come here to win. We are extremly happy to be here in India and Kolkata especially to be able to play at the Eden Gardens.”
Asked to comment whether an ‘A’ team tournament would in any way reduce the level of competitiveness, Afridi said, “Playing against India is always very special”.
“We have a lot of friendship among ourselves, but on field we play real aggressive cricket. This series is all the more important for us as winning this tournament would give a license to be in the national squad. Besides, an India-Pakistan match always brings out the best in both the teams.”
Pakistan last played in India in 1999 when the senior side had come to play the Asian Test Championships.

CALCUTTA (AFP) - Russel Arnold led from the front with a quick-fire 96 not out as Sri Lanka A thrashed India A by seven wickets in the opening match of a triangular one-day cricket tournament here.

Indian opener Gautam Gambhir slammed an impressive 125-ball 113 with one six and 11 fours to help his team set a stiff target. He put on 159 for the second wicket with one-day specialist Mohammad Kaif (71).
The Indian pair were later upstaged by hard-hitting Arnold, who had played 43 Tests and 120 one-day internationals for the national team before being dropped for the recent home Test series against England.
Left-handed Arnold put on 126 for the third wicket with Saman Jayantha, who cracked a 98-ball 92 with two sixes and 11 fours.

I hope Afridi steps up because i luv watching him, play he is a very good bowler i think, fields well too, but he needs to do more with the bat i hope he thrashes india in india, also imran nazir has gotten a lot of chances as well and needs to capitalize, do u guys remember the sharjah cup final pak vs sa when nazir and afridi thrashed sa bowling attack i think it was 99 or 00!
After the wonderfull performence of Sri Lanka A, I think Afridi has a big challange right from the first game...
Damn and damnation! And Munaf is supposed to be our future bowling hope. Well, you gotta lose some to win some. As long as the youngsters learn from the loss and come back stronger (meaning: beat Pakistan).
Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat first. Imran Nazir out for 10 runs. Shahid Afridi hits a massive half century off just 35 balls. This is how Afridi brings up his 50!
9.6 Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, two runs, fifty! good length delviery outside the off stump, played wide of the cover fielder
9.5 Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, oh dear! murder! fuller length delivery on the middle and leg, flicked away to the mid wicket boundary, Afridi on a roll here
9.4 Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, more! again pitched up, lofted straight back over the bowler head, one bounce and over the rope
9.3 Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, SIX, MAXIMUM! big big hit! another slower delivery, this one is again in the slot, smashed over the mid wicket fence, powerful hit, Afridi on the rampage here
9.2 Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, no run, slower one, Afridi tries to turn it away but makes no contact, ball clips the pad and runs down to the short fine leg region
9.1 Kulasekara to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, pitched up on the middle and off, perfecly in the slot, lofted over the mid on fielder, as easyas it gets
Pakistan 90/1 in 11 overs. Salman Butt and Shahid Afridi are on the crease!
