Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
Mohajurs should go back to India ![]()
Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
I always noted that Heyderabadis consider themselves very distinct from other Muhajirs,,, also Biharis are looked down upon by most ethnic groups.
In general Muhajirs have done a lot for Pakistan specifically and urdu speaking people have provided subcontinental msulims with leadership in the past.
Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
thats debateable.. from few karachi friends i have .. biharis speak much better than Hyderabadi ones.. and I have seen koreans speak better urdu than Hyderabadi ones from India.. they literally rape urdu..
Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
lol Degas :D
i believe its ppl from lucknow who speak excellent urdu.. not hyderabadis.. the latter have their own vocabulary that most urdu speakers dont have a clue bout..
actually.. in my family, hyderabadis arent considered urdu speakers cuz of their lingo..
ppl from delhi (us), agra, amroha, allahbad, lucknow... pure urdu speakers.
for marriage purposes... we still prefer our own birdari or oustide delhi walay.. if not.. then one of the places listed above as urdu speakers... marriage with hyderabadis, biharis and punjabis is still considered a no-no...
not that they havent taken place...
Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
khawateen its true right that delhi walay are famous for their food? we had one in my office and his mother had to cook lunch for six because we'd all mooch off of him.
Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
the hierarchies do exist but they are kind of self-referential and outdated…they really dont mean much from the perspective of an outsider…good urdu is no criterion…the best way now is to just ask them where they live…![]()
Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
not to brag.. but its true… we are surrounded by punjabis and hyderabadi families and whenever there is a gathering.. my mom is asked to cook cuz of our cuisine.. excellent food ![]()
my mom gives her recipes to her non delhi friends.. and mannn they butcher it beyond belief.. punjabis end up putting whole garam masala (from black peppers to choti elaichi) in everything they can put their hands on (even dishes that dont require it).. and the hyderabadis make everything sour… then they come back to mom and say "aapki jaisi nahi bani.. apnay ghalat recipe likh wayi hai " ![]()
funny u should say that RAVAGE… ppl that work with my dad in his dept all eat lunch together.. so mom has to pack lunch for 8 cuz everyone ends up eating all of dad’s food and none of theirs… and dad cant eat waht they bring cuz..well.. its pathetic… he used to come home all grumpy “salay.. khud sarawa khana la thay hai.. aja thay hai mera khana khanay… kul se bohat sara dena.. mein bhooka reh ja tha hu” ![]()

Re: A Question for Urdu speakers..
Interesting stuff guys..thanks for the insights..obviously much of what is being said deals with that single partition generation..and will probably be less relevant in time.
Anyway a few observations I have correctly or incorrectly made which I would like to mention and see if theya re accurate ( I did discuss this trhead with a few people I know)
Firstly the Delhi- Lucknow group seem to be mentioned frequently as the more "aristorcratic" group amongst Urdu speakers..there urdu is also generallyy considered more pure..( this makes sense considering those areas represented the dominant Muslim part of the sub continent culturally and histyorically speaking).
Hyderabad people are perceived as "upstarts" by the first group, because the Hyderabad state was a fairly late invention I'd imagine.
Biharis are mentioned as more industrious and self made..so socio-economically I am guessing they were more deprived ( would it be fair to say Biharis represent a significant group in the MQM ? )
These are all sweeping generalisations but they are not meant to offend..
Lastly where does grops liek the Saigols, Gujratis and Memons fit in this picture? or am I mixing this up?
