A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Been in US for around 11 years from 1998 (California, Washing DC, New York, North Carolina, Michigan) and never been targeted for any such thing (even SINGLE TIME). Neither I know anyone (first hand) who has been targeted. Here is a kicker, I was in Manhattan at the time of 9/11 strikes. I was there with my boss just for a business meeting and we were supposed to fly back to NC but got stuck for couple of days and drove all the way back finally.

I have desi accent, my wife soemtimes wears jeans kurtas, on eid etc we all wear Pakistani dresses (including children) and go for Namaz. I used to take extended break on Friday for prayers. In Ramadan my employers (and collegues) have accomodated me (coming in early after Sehri and leaving early). My car had Pakistani flag bumper sticker. My kids wear Pakistani dresses in any "Dress show" at school.

Never been targetted.

On Airport? YES. Every time I fly, I am screened more throughly but I understand the reason specially when Immigration officer hands over the password and say "thank you, you are good to go sorry but we have to complete the process"

I guess I have been among good people?

Good to hear that, but again its unbelievable for me.

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Scarface wherever you live, I’ll personally take you to the US. How’s that? Maybe you can believe it then :chai:

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

I live in the UK and i experience all kinds of racism! Guess it doesnt help if you live in an area with UK's biggest BNP members!

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Ahan okay. I am was just being polite when I offered :p didn't know you would take me up on the offer. Give me an year or so, I'll go to the US then. I know it is hard to believe something you can't see or experience but sometimes you just have to.

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Which area is that?

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Scarface-Deffo its a UK thing and i understand pakistanis outside the UK would most likely not understand why its offensive. my comment was more of a reply to nadz than you scarface :-)

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Re: A question for Pakis in America/Europe

Ive been in america for over 20 years. ALMOST my entire life.

Before 9/11 I never had a single problem.

After 9/11, life changed.

Im in Texas, and used to live in Austin when 9/11 happened. That city at that time was very small, and not so populated, so vast population was HICKS (for those who dont know what that is..in urud it would translate to edited) I had to stop wearing hijab. I'd been wearing hijab as a little girl since grade school. But overall, where ever I would go, market, mall, grocery, I would get DEATH stare's from these hicks. I would cry my eyeballs out.

Now I live in Houston and its a whole different story. Here there is a large desi population, and the city's majority is full of minorities. So, most of these white/american people have enough exposure to muslims to know that the 19 ppl of 9/11 dont represent the rest of the 3 billion muslims.
