A Q Khan: 'Pakistan Government knew/part of nuclear proliferation'

Musharraf himself may not be directly involved in proliferation of nuclear arms since he came on the scene a bit later, I give you that. Even if AQ Khan is guilty it is just incomprehensible that he could have committed this crime without the full knowledge and involvement of the corrupt generals in the military (going as far back as mard-e-haq Zia-ul-Haq)

So AQ is dead right about being made the scapegoat in this whole saga.

There is an old saying about "getting caught with hand stuck in the cookie jar".

And the hand stuck in Islamic brothers Iran and Libya's nuke Jar was AQK's. Had there been a military general involved (directly), he would have been on the list of "wanted persons" too.

Iran and Libya have no love for our generals. But they pointed out AQK as the main supplier.

The reason for the downfall of AQK is simple. The guy wants to be a rock star. And just like rock stars, tabloids are after him and making sure he gets canned by IAEA and the Western investigators.

Ideally! People in AQK's positions must remain low-key in their own interest and in the interest of their nation. Dr. Smar Mubarak Mand was a patriot and a true hero. How many times you saw his interviews in the international papers?

p.s. AQK still don't get it. He continues to be rock star-wanna-be.

burqaposhx bhaijan. There is an interesting thing that needs to be noted, which some of the posters do not realize. That is, in their defense of AQ Khan, and their hate for Great President Musharaf, people are resorting to a blame culture and pointing fingers towards Pakistani leaders and previous governments. What they fail to realize is that it is not about that. It is about the integrity of Pakistan's Nuclear program and weapons. With their arguments, they are clearly proving the point that the West has been making, which is, Pakistan cannot be trusted with its Nuclear Weapons.

It is a shame people do not understand the bigger picture.

I think AQ Khan was made the scapegoat by the Army, in oder to hide their own skeletons in the cupboard.
It seems like Army proliferated nukes while under the control of Talibanic generals like Aslam Baig and Hameed Gul. It is highly unlikely that AQ Khan would have proliferated nukes to several countries and no one in government and Army would have known it.

Actually, everyone may have been involved. Army AND AQ Khan. But governments of the time might not be involved, as such delicate issues were controlled by ISI and Army. Political governments were kept away from such issues.

Whether true or not, these kind of stories, and the shenanigans of AQ Khan, are not helping Pakistan cause, and putting credence to stories that Pakistan cannot be trusted with its Nuclear Weapons.

Bhutto said to be nuclear smuggler

THE former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, on a state visit to North Korea in 1993, smuggled in critical data on uranium enrichment to help ease the way for a missile deal with Pyongyang, a journalist who was close to the assassinated politician says.

The smuggling claim was made during conversations that Shyam Bhatia had with Ms Bhutto in 2003 and is contained in his book Goodbye, Shahzadi, published in India last month. Ms Bhutto was killed in December while campaigning to win back the prime minister’s post.

The account, if verified, could advance the timeline for North Korea’s interest in uranium enrichment. David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, a nuclear weapons research organisation, said the assertion “makes sense” because there were signs of “funny procurements” in the late 1980s by North Korea that suggested a nascent effort to assemble a uranium enrichment project.

Pakistan - and in particular a nuclear smuggling ring run by the Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, who was instrumental in developing Pakistan’s nuclear bomb - has long been suspected as a source of expertise for North Korea, but such high-level government involvement has always been denied.
Bhatia is an investigative reporter who has written four other books, including one of the earliest accounts of India’s nuclear program. Bhatia said he first met Ms Bhutto at Oxford University in 1974 and kept contact with her until just weeks before she was killed.

Selig Harrison, a specialist on North Korea at the Centre for International Policy, said Bhatia’s account was credible because he knew Bhutto well and was a “reputable Indian journalist”.

In his book, Bhatia says that Ms Bhutto brought up the North Korea visit during a discussion in 2003 about her difficulties with Pakistan’s military. “Let me tell you something,” she said, before telling Bhatia to turn off his tape recorder. “I have done more for my country than all the military chiefs of Pakistan combined.”

At the time, Pakistan was in need of new missile technology that would counter improvements in India’s missiles.

Ms Bhutto said she was asked to carry “critical nuclear data” to hand over in Pyongyang as part of a barter deal.

“Before leaving she shopped for an overcoat with the ‘deepest possible pockets’ into which she transferred CDs containing the uranium data the North Koreans wanted,” Bhatia wrote. “She implied with a glint in her eye that she had acted as a two-way courier, bringing North Korean missile information on CDs back with her on the return journey.”

Trusting or not trusting Pakistan about nuclear weapons, is completely irrelevant, just like you. So now you can cry about it in your little hole.

You are right. Duty of Political governments in Pakistan is to take credit for nothing, loot, plunder, lie, do ayeashie, destroy country, do hair transplant, play polo, buy properties all over the world, fill their Swiss bank accounts, and make fool of ignorant people of Pakistan.

Just because we did the first test in 98, does not mean we didn't have the knowhow before hand. Do you think they all just woke up in 98 and created, designed, validated the nuclear weapon in one year? Read up on the history of the nuke program if you get a chance. It dates back decades. Thy weren't preparing patakhay.

Re: A Q Khan: 'Pakistan Government knew/part of nuclear proliferation'

AQ Khan, if what he said is true, just validated Pakistan as a dangerous nuclear dealing terrorist country. Good job.

If there is a nuke attack on American by Al Qaeda & co., Pakistan will be the first recepitant of the the backlash. Hydrogen bombs, neutron bombs etc, all will be headed our way.

Why are you always happy when bad light is put on Pakistan? What is your agenda here?

We know that, but do you understand that saving Pakistan is a greater cause than saving AQ Khan? All you anti-mush people are more than wiling to drag Pakistan into your filth. Says a lot about your true pay masters.

Check into an ER.

It was very relevant but the blind cannot look beyond the jammat circulated posters.

Who would've trusted a claim "I can give you a nuclear bomb technology" without proving to the world with its relevant testing? Without proven test and its results nuclear bomb can be a bomb or a patakha if anyone cares.

I agree.

Key word. Past tense.

Re: A Q Khan: 'Pakistan Government knew/part of nuclear proliferation'

Hello,

I have always believed that the A.Q.Khan proliferation was not an individual's rogue action but a more institutionalized one involving several rogue agencies and conducted with the government of Pakistan's collusion. I am sure everyone in Pakistan also knew that but felt that making Khan a scapegoat will avert serious punitive action against Pakistan.

Now that Khan himself has corraborated it, it will be impossible for any foreign powers to trust any institutional stand taken by Pakistan because of trustability gaps such as this.

Pundit Vikram

Its a shame that people like you who support illegal overthrow operations of Musharraf, its people like you who don't realize the mistakes of Musharraf. If Musharraf really wanted to save Pakistan from so called threats of integrity he would've launched a wider inquiry, punish a bigger group of people responsible for "stealing/selling" such sacred technology. But that inquiry would've included few big army generals/brigadiers hence lacking the balls Mushy only punished Dr AQ Khan. But why do I keep expecting "justice" from likes of supporter of Mushy.

ehtasab bhaijan. No need to panic. Great President Musharaf is about to be ousted by Great Zardari. I am sure there will be an inquiry after Great President Musharaf is gone, and the civilian government will indeed prove that Pakistani officials from all the institutions are involved in proliferation? Isn't that what you and everyone wants to hear? :)

aalsi, this is getting boring now
