I don't think US Muslims are any less practising than UK ones, just that in the UK desis in particular tend to be a lot more attached to their 'back home' culture and cling to their old traditions more.
I think Rifqa's parents handled the situation quite well, I imagine a lot of Muslims in the UK would have just shipped the daughter back home and gotten her married off against her will. Perhaps her parents think it's just a phase she's going thru..
