It's not necessarily even something "psychic". I think it's pretty well established that animals know when an earthquake is coming for example.
And in cold places animals know what the winter is going to be like. If the winter is going to be a cold one, muskrats will build an extra warm lodge, with thick walls, etc. If not, they will build a less thick one.
