2972 only reflects the fact that the one attack was a massively devastating attack on the part of terrorists, not on the actual size of the terrorist network itself or the actual number of people who adhere to that philosophy. If one or a few terrorist ever managed to inflict even more damage, say 5000 instead of just 3000, you would instantly innflate that small group of terrorists to an entire global network?
The Imam, the Time Square bomber and Brooklyn Queens arrest are only a product of the war on terror. They are the result not the cause.
If America were attacking Indians, you would have a disproportionately large number of Indian terrorists. If they were attacking Israel, you would have a disproportionately large number of Jewish terrorists.
You see a large number of Muslims being caught as terrorists these days, because currently the war is occurring in their backyards. Its not that these people are inheriently drawn to terrorism, its that they reside in an area that is the confluence of many of the worlds conflicts.
The other reason I believe you hear more about Muslim terrorists is simply because the get more coverage. No one cares about Maoists, or Basque separatists, or even the Tamil tigers. Tamil Suicide bombers barely register among anyone other then Sri Lankans themselves, but you would think that Muslim invented Suicide from they way its covered. Point is, Muslim extremists get more coverage for all kinds of reasons, not least of which is that they are generally at war with the US, and US opinion is what counts. And have you noticed how enemies of the US are also enemies of the world by default?
