8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

honestly I havent given him any sugar yet so I dont know but I am thinking you could use brown sugar and/or less white sugar.. no?

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

^ i typed out a long answer and then it crashed. grrr....

but yes, recipe please for the jello, custard and cupcakes please!

gtg, the kid loooves crackers and cheese- you should definitely introduce ali to the combo. its also a good way to expand their palettes a bit- so far he's tried mozzarella and cheddar and liked them both.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

^oh interesting... just the regular ones from the store?

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

^Cottage cheese is a great introduction. You can mix it with avocado or just put it on bread. Bread and butter is also another breakfast option. Definitely introduce yoghurt now. Just mix it with the fruits you give him. My ped told me anything goes except for peanuts, honey, fish and eggs. But I cheated and as soon as she turned 9 months introduced her to eggs! Actually I had been giving some egg yolk since she was 7 months coz yolks are so nutritious. Now I scramble an egg in butter and put a tbsp of cottage cheese in it. It turns out really good.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

avocado and bread is way healthier and yummier than bread and butter imo.
introduce him to lots of veggies and fruits! you have to train them while they are young so they won't have problems in the future.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

fruit has lots of sugar in it too. it just comes down to giving them "good sugar" vs. "bad sugar".
anything processed is way worse than what you make at home and with a homemade recipe, you can control how much sugar goes into anything. that alone makes it superior to anything store bought, imho. plus, sometimes kids just don't want to eat fruits and veggies- they want to eat what you're eating and if you're like me and love a good cupcake, well then, that's an issue :p

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

egg yolks are fine once they're past 6 months; with egg whites you have to wait until they're 1. also for fish, its usually the shellfish you have to avoid but you can give white fish like tilapia with no issues.

my kid hates cottage cheese- i tried mixing it with different things and he wasn't having any of it. he's also not a fan of avocadoes but luckily he seems to like the other stuff masha'Allah so its ok.

gtg, we buy our cheeses from the deli section of the supermarket. and yes, definitely introduce yogurt to him now too.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

yes I know that :P
but fatty foods are fatty foods regardless of where its made.
thats my opinion though
of course why does it matter when cupcakes, custard, cola etc etc taste so good.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

^ not necessarily. like i said, and you know, there are good vs. bad ingredients and a cupcake made at home with "good" ingredients is not the same as a store-bought cupcake, so no, one fatty cupcake is not the same as the other :)

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

as I said its just my opinion

I'm not by all means a health junky but I do feel sorry for those who can't eat gluten. Gluten free muffins without sugar taste terrible.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

moderation is the key

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

but you don't think making sugary stuff easily accessible will cause an unhealthy habit for kids? there are so many fast food chains and variety of candy now.

How can you tell a kid to moderate how much candy they can have when its always been an easy access?

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

The parent can try to limit the 'access' to candy or anything they do not want the kid to have.
Just do not bring it in the house. If you love candy three times a day,cut it out and amend your own habits.Having a kid is a perfect opportunity to change your own unhealthy eating habits if you have any.
I do not see how you can just tell them that 'sugar' or 'sweet' does not exist in the world and the only thing to eat is fruits or veggies or home cooked healthy meals.Sooner or later they will figure it out and ask for it.

Just my two cents...

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

I guess too much of anything is bad for you. That's why a well balanced diet is important.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

kakee, you teach them with example, for instance in our family cake was brought only on birthdays, so we grew up with same mind set. when i bake cake at home, it has no frosting, i love adding lot of fresh berries in it, cake with frosting only comes on special events. fast food, samething, we dont eat regularly but once in a blue moon. we do go out once a week but its mostly indian, middle eastern or oriental cusine. again your kids will do what they watched you growing up.

yes, i am not going toban chocolate or cakes/cookies on kids but i can certainly control the quantity teach moderation by my example.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

just wanted to say that yoplait does have live and active cultures so that part of the article is false- it says it right on the label

not that i’m advocating eating it at all- the sugar amount is still atrocious

and a big EW at the rest of the stuff! beef fat in cakes?!

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

exactly. moderation is the name of the game. you can't deprive your kid of the occasional sweet treat but you can teach them what is and isn't ok and in what quantities. its like teaching them pork isn't an option for them as a muslim. it doesn't mean they won't see ads for bacon burgers or have friends who eat ham, but they'll know not to eat it themselves.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

I don't think its deprivation at least not at under 7years of age.

I don't see any good giving kids sugary stuff and of course moderation is the key but what is moderation?
all those unhealthy snacks wouldn't it be ok if its just once a year?

I know I don't have a kid so you may think I'm clueless but I've watched how my mother and relatives raised us/their kids and even though we're family our diet is very different. My mom is overweight and because of that she made sure we wouldn't have weight problems which means that it was rare for us to ever have candy/ice cream in our house. I was only able to eat/drink sugary stuff at other peoples houses or on my birthdays. It didn't bother me because I had fruit (I love fruit) and I lived in south asian countries so it was cheap to buy.

Besides junk food/carbonated drinks/candy has worse effects on children than adults and can cause more health problems for them in the future.
There is a reason why diabetes/obesity is on the rise now.

Can somebody tell me where I said to ban kids from eating junk food? all I said that there are better options.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

the whole idea of making custards jelly etc at home is to NOT add sugar. u use fruit purees for sweetness. atleast thats what i do in the recipes i follow.

waise... a bit of sugar here and there WILL NOT kill your kid nor have its teeth fall out instantly. the idea is to just know whats in their food.. if you make it at home u know.. store bought stuff u never know just how much of it is essence and what percentage is pure.

a lot of parents just think spices are limited to red chili powder or pepper and sweetness only comes from sugars.

a kid can have so much more tahn just these things.

Re: 8 alarmingly unhealthy snacks to avoid giving your kids- or eating yourself!

dude, i never said you talked about banning anything. my post is my point of view and what i think moderation is. i think parents set example for their kids, if they eat healthy, so will the kids.
