Nuclear assets made pakistan safe from direct confrontation with India, because it can be mutually devastating and it is one big thubs up, biggest loss is loss of east pakistan, which in a way was the result of politics between Yahya Khan,ZAB and Mujib with super Indira factored in:)

But confrontation with Bengalis goes back to earlier days of Independence. I personally don't agree with the notion that biggest achievement of Pakistan is its nuclear assets. The way it survived in its earlier days (without those assets), when it was lacking basic infrastructure, is the proof for that.

Then Imagine pakistan having nuclear assets in 1971 and consequently result of war, Kargil type misadventure would have resulted in war had pakistan been nuclear powerful, only good thing about kargil was that there was no civilian causlties in the war, in this way, nuclear assets of both countries saved life of many civilians who are considered as tragedy of war like 65 and 71. Confrontation in a multi ethnic conutry is very normal thing, but to amplify them to acheive personal objective by those in power is mistake of masses of native country, not even a dictator can survive if masses don't support him.

Thats a good point the kaur, but did nuclear assets could save Russia from disintegration?

Soviet were disintegrated because Russians didn't consider others as equal and germany got united because they loved each other, same things korean can't acheive as they are now two different people. Soviet got disintegrated peacefully, more or less, what US would have done to soviets if Soviets wouldn't have been equal power, they might have bombmed soviets into disintegration like they bombed japan to surrender.

That proves that being nuclear power doesn't stop disintegration if you don't consider others equal.
For me biggest loss for Pakistan was loss of good leaders (Mr Jinah) at very early stage.
How do you see India in this regard? I mean what is the major achievement and biggest loss of India in last 65 years?
Re: 65 Years of Independence - Pakistan
The biggest achievement of Pakistan has come recently and has been the creation of a lively and free press and media. This is something still denied to many countries, and is the basis upon which transparent and efficient government can eventually be built. When I really think about it, I'm now optimistic for Pakistan's future.
The biggest lost was losing Jinnah before he could define the direction of the new country. Without him, it floundered under lesser men for far too many decades.
Re: 65 Years of Independence - Pakistan
I concur with mad_scientist that the plus points that we have in our recent history are free media and judiciary. I will add the current tenure of the government as a positive as well (disregarding their incompetence and corruption), if the government completes its tenure and hands over the power to who ever wins after the next elections. This would be their biggest achievement.
The losses that we have had are death of Quaid e Azam before he could put the country in some direction, another is that the country has been ruled by dictators for a very long time. As a side effect of the dictatorships we have lost East Pakistan, and now have issues like Balochistan and terrorism staring us straight in our face.

Nuclear power has it advantages as I said earlier but it is not completely change the ideas in the head of human being. India is like an old, diseased elephant, it is walking on its feet now is itself a miracle:), Biggest acheivement is eradication of polio and small pox. Small pox was eradicated in my father's generation. the other was survival in the toughest time, after 89, fall of soviets plus four insurgency(kashmir, punjab, nagaland, assam) with economic crisis, India survived, plus our growth in new decade is what I think is acheivement of India, loss is loss of babri mosque, unable to protect rights of assamese in assam and pundits in Kashmir.
Re: 65 Years of Independence - Pakistan
Yes I do consider it achievement for a country to overcome diseases like Polio and small pox. :k:
Re: 65 Years of Independence - Pakistan
Next is tuberculosis(TB), health ministry is providing free medication for it,India has also acheived significant results in controlling maternity mortality rate and child mortality rate but things likes female foeticide is proving unstoppable.
