I think what he wanted to convey (through the back door i.e.) is that atleast one Pakistani player was illegally playing for the junior side using a fake birth certificate perhaps...since he was old enough to be married...

This is an interesting issue....I know for sure that in most small towns and rural areas in India (and in Pak as well, I think), birth dates are not sacrosanct and usually fudged...so its my feeling that a good many players on either side dont really qualify for the Junior team. Also bear in mind that many of the Indian hockey players come from tribal areas...

Reminds me also of Saeed Afridi...and his farji birth certificate...

Anyways, the Pakistani mehmaanbaji continues unabated...
First it was the cricket one-day series...
then it was the Volleyball final in SAF (which I thought was the most keenly contested Indo-Pak game in the tournament)
Then the test series
...and now this.

How can we ever pay back...

Some1, I think it is a very poorly kept secret that Afridi understated his age by 5ish years, and unfortunately this is a relatively common phenomenon. but I think as far as cricket is concerned, Sharyar Khan actually threw out guys from Pak's under 19 team. and by looking at the boys you could tell that they were young. so things are being tightened in cricket.

and also as Ehsan bhai said, marriage has nothing to do with age. people, not always in villages, are beginning to get married earlier based on religious reasons. again, a very irresponsible and personal comment not befitting of a leader of a sports team. doesn't sound like a very sharp cookie.

obviously the PM and President of India forgot to brief the hockey team on diplomacy and winning hearts

hockey in India is not exactly a sport where convent educated , sophisticated class or articulate people join ( for the lack of bucks and stardom in it)
so you would find people as mentioned above who are unarticulate , uncouth - most of them have been picked up from the villages in far flung tribal/rural areas...
so you find them making such crass comments...
but the coach was I think stupid..saying all that Kargil crap..

The Indians had to dragged politics afterall......

Bitter, you are spot on. Exactly what I wanted to reply to sambrialian.

To understand why players say what they say, we need to take a look at their upbringing.

Diplomacy, politeness and articulation are not part of day to day inter-personal interaction in third-world countries like India and Pak....these are inculcated only through right education...most of the Indian hockey players coming from tribal/rural areas(note their christian-convert names including captain Sandeep Michael) haven't exactly had the best of education.... so when they make statements such as the above...I know where they are coming from.

Bilkul Sahi. :k:
Those guys shouldnot have made that comment. I think this thread should be merged with Xtreme’s education & cricket thread.
