MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines foreign secretary will ask the United States to hand over four U.S. Marines accused of raping a Filipino woman when he visits Washington next week, officials said on Monday.
Alberto Romulo will relay Manila’s request for the immediate handover of the four soldiers, indicted by a Philippine court on December 27 for the rape of a 22-year-old woman, during a trip to Washington from January 17 to 22.
“There is pressure from the government to have custody over the U.S. soldiers,” a senior Philippine diplomat told reporters. “The secretary will definitely take it up with U.S. State Department Secretary Condoleezza Rice.”
