LTE is backward compatible, it is the future. The operators who have not gone for it now will have to go for it at some stage. In countries like Pakistan costs matter a lot therefore the companies might have striked a balance between speed and costs. Maybe they’d have decided that for the time being 3G is enough. 3 G is becoming a thing of the past now.

I don’t think that this is true even though Pakistan is GSM. LTE is a different bird altogether as AT&T had to upgrade their towers, though what is nice is that if LTE is out of range or overloaded, HSPA+ is pretty fast compared to 3G in CDMA. I was kind of surprised when someone told me that Pakistan doesn’t have blanket 3G coverage.

One good thing for CDMA here is that with the new VOLTE technology, carriers like Verizon would be able to do voice and data at one time. Right now, 3g connection has to be cut while a person is on the phone with CDMA. I sure hope that our “chinese brothers” do come up with something that would run efficiently on battery with this technology. It shouldn’t be really that hard to make 4G standard in Pakistan considering how small the country is. Balochistan or FATA might be an issue but who wants to give TTP 4G LTE for uploading their execution videos?

^ lol @ TTP. It seems as if Warid might be going for the other 4G license.

Government is lucky to sell the 3 G spectrum though, as if they had delayed the auction they might have missed on the 1 billion dollars or so what they have got at the moment.

True that from definition point of view. First HSPA+ was touted and marketed as 4G, now LTE is marketed as 4G technology. Though LTE is very different technology from 3G as 3G is CDMA and LTE is FDMA but the defined throughput for 4G is far beyond LTE. LTE has different “categories”, Cat 3 reaches 100 mbps in stationary conditions if network is REALLY good while by definition 4G should offer 1Gb/s in stationary conditions

100 Mbps is a pretty good speed, considering most countries dont even have that on their land based internet systems yet.
