      There are many hadith but I'll quote one:

      Book 'Judgments (Ahkaam)' of Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 255.

      Narrated 'Abdullah: Allah's Apostle said, "Do not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: (1) A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously. (2) A man whom Allah has given wisdom (knowledge of the Quran and the Hadith) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others.

      I think we all have some knowledge of the Quran and Hadith so why don't we share it with each others mean its learning and teaching. Before I start this thread, I placed few rules in addition to already prescibed rules of this forum, and I request you all to please read and follow it. Violation of any rules will consequence strict action because we are about to learn and teach from a divine book "Holy Qur'an" which is not only a book but it is the words of Almighty Allah. Rules are as under:

      1. All rules of R&S Forum will apply specially Policy/Rule #3.
      2. The translation of the 'Holy Quran' will be in one standard i.e. of 'Sahih International'. However if further explanation of any verse required than we can use the translation of (a) Muhsin Khan (b) Pickthall (c) Yusuf Ali (d) Shakir and (e) Dr. Ghali.
      3. Next verse will be quoted after 24 hours. However, if any verse required more discussion (details) about it than we'll delay it to 48 hours mean the next post will be posted after 48 hours but right next post after 24 hours. Moreover, due to any reason if I'm not available, than I request any member to proceed with right next verse in same format.
      4. If any member would like to add/share any incident, matter, extra details related to any verse, I request him/her to plz pm me before posting in this thread, enabling me to open a separate thread.
      5. Please do not post any links of the site in discussion nor such material which copied and pasted same as it. You are welcome to write it in your own words (as per your understanding) but only in that case when we required more details in same thread. Otherwise separate thread will be created for such purpose.
      6. Non-Muslim or those who follow any other religion than Islam are welcomed in this thread. But they must follow the rules and DONOT show disrespect.
      7. CM and moderate of this forum reserve all the rights to approve, disapprove any post.

      May Allah (SWT) reward your efforts ... This is a natural progression from a couple of threads that I put up some time ago ... so I have linked them here ...

      Your idea takes it further because we are analysing the verses one at a time ...

      I would like to elaborate here on the phrase "Bismillah ..."

      It is constructed from three Arabic words.

      Bi + Ism + Allah

      When the word/Name "Allah" is pronounced in isolation we have to "fatten" the fatha sound after the Laam... we call this jalee ... this also happens with the Raa letter, except when before the laam or Raa there is a kasra ... in the "Bismillah" there is a kasra before the Laam and that results on the pronunciation being "thinner" or leen.

      Bi = With/In/By
      Ism = Name
      Allah = {Proper noun of Deity in Arabic - can be viewed as Al-Ilah}

      Since the Name Allah is a combined word which contains the word 'Al' = The = Definite Article - This makes whatever follow it "definite" ... Something "definite" is something "Known" ... A wisdom here is that "Allah is Known" or defined for us to know ... There can be none else with the name that has been defined - Denoting Unique Identity ...

      When we say "an apple" we mean to say one of many ... When we say "The apple" we are talking about a specific apple ... Likewise "Allah" is inherent to specificity ... the Name is always Definite.

      "Allah" the word begins with a hamzat-ul-wasl - which means that it can be deleted ... leaving the Llah with a sukun on the laam ... the meem from "Ism" joins with the laam with a damma giving a jalee sound ..."Ismullah" ... Also, the word Ism has a hamzat-ul-wasl which means that too can be deleted leaving the Seen with a sukun ... "Bi" is harf-u-Jarr ... which converts the marfu' of "Ismu" to the jarr of "Ismi" sound ... thus making up the phrase "Bismillahi"

      It translates to "In the Name of Allah" - However, if we look to both English and Urdu translations we say "I begin" - These two words are totally absent from the Arabic, but yet we still say them by meaning ... What is happening when we say these words?

      What we are doing is recognising the sanctity in the Name of Allah (SWT) and using it to anoint the passages that follow ... just as we use it to anoint the actions we take ... We are metaphorically using what is blessed to continue and surround us in that blessing ... So it can be taken as a form of cleansing ... declaring that we acknowledge the sanctity of the act/words and seek approval from Allah (SWT) using His Name ... We begin - Using the Name of Allah (SWT) since the rightful place of Allah (SWT) is as His Attribute - The First ... at the beginning ...

      We can indeed say anything noble precedes the words "In the Name of Allah" -

      I begin in the Name of Allah
      I read in the Name of Allah
      I walk ...
      I run ...
      and so on ... all are relevant with a single phrase "Bismillahi" ... So we are taught this universal phrase of sanctifying our actions and we are taught the nobility of the Name and it's rightful place - hence we use it through a sense of etiquette and honour ... And what better place to use this than before reading the "Word of Allah"?

      Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem - both from the same root in Arabic are Attributive to Allah (SWT) - Why used here? Well perhaps "The Qur'an is indeed a Mercy and Guidance which has been given to us without our efforts" It is like being put in a puzzle game (life) and then being given the solution book ... (Al-Qur'an) ... This is indeed a Mercy and reflects the nature of the manner in which The Qur'an al-Kareem was revealed to us.
      The Prophet(SAW) said:
      "I am leaving you two things and you will never go astray as long as you cling to them -- they are the Book of Allah and my Sunnah." [Reported by Al- Haakim - Sahih].

      Even though few lines cannot do justice to this Ayah, I am putting down my understanding of this Ayah briefly:

      Bismillah-ar-Rahman-ar-Raheem:
      In the name of Allah, the most compassionate, the most merciful.

      Even though every Ayah in Quran is important, this ayah is one of the most important Ayah in Quran. Nothing helps human in this world and would help human on judgment day more than this Ayah (or what is mentioned in this Ayah). That is the reason Allah told his creations to recite this Ayah regularly, so that his creations can understand, remember, and rely on this Ayah at time of despair. When a person remembers Allah with his attributes ‘Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem’ that person shows hope and expectations from compassion and mercy of Allah even if the person is sinner of highest order. Actually, it is sign of Iman to have hope and expect mercy from Allah.

      12:87 (Yusuf Ali): "O my sons! go ye and enquire about Joseph and his brother, and never give up hope of Allah's Soothing Mercy: truly no one despairs of Allah's Soothing Mercy, except those who have no faith."

      What Ayah means:

      Bismillah = In the name of Allah. Whenever one starts or initiate an act, one should do that in the name of Allah. If one does that with understanding, true intention and faith, one would show (confirm) their belief and commitments towards Allah, belief and commitment that Allah is our creator and lord, and that we are committed to do everything for him (in his name).
      Anyhow, there is more to it ... that is:

      Ar-Rahman-ar-Raheem = the most compassionate, the most merciful: The addition with Bismillah is most meaningful if one understands it. One can say that:

      We do not start everything in the name of Allah who has many attributes but in the name of Allah who is ‘most compassionate’ and ‘most merciful’. Thus, we make relationship with Allah who is most compassionate and most merciful or make especial relationship with particular attributes of Allah (Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem). It is these attributes of Allah that helps us in this world and would help us on judgment day the most, hence it is important to keep remembering these attributes of Allah all the time ... so that we can remember and rely on these attributes of Allah without hesitation, in this world as well as on judgment day.

      Just imagine, instead of starting everything in the name of Allah (with all intentions and beliefs) remembering that Allah is ‘Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem’, one starts everything in the name of Allah remembering that Allah is ‘Al-Jabbar and Al-Qahar’. If that would happen then our relationship with Allah would develop who is ‘Al-Jabbar and Al-Qahar’, then in this world and on judgment day we would deserve that Allah treats us according to his attributes ‘Al-Jabbar’ and ‘Al-Qahar’.

      It is recitation of Bismillah-Ar-Rahman-Ar-Raheem, especially remembering all the time that Allah is Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem, makes us deserving to get treated by Allah in this world as well as on judgment day according to his attributes of being Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem.

      [It does not mean that Allah do not show his mercy on those who do not remember Allah or do not remember Allah as ‘Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem’, it only means that this is the way Allah likes humans to remember him, because Allah himself want to treat people according to his attributes of being ‘Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem’.]


      Allah is Al-gafoor-ur-Raheem.
      39:53 (Yusuf Ali) Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

      Surah al faatiha is divine proclamation for mankind through the messenger.

      bismillah is introduction of the source of quranic message ie Allah and his attributes. After introduction of Allah the purpose of revelation is made clear ie people must live by constitution of Allah who has set up laws throughout the universe for all things to operate according to and so therefore should people so that they have peace, progress and prosperity just like people before.

      It is a sort of an agreement between Allah and people as was in place before this agreement. Allah is telling people that if you follow what I advise for you faithfully then great things will happen for you but if went off track then that will happen that happened to such like people before you.

      Hamad does mean praise or glory but the reason is someone has done something which need recognition. So the foundational meaning of word hamad is TAARAF. Knowing something or some one. The universe makes glory of Allah known because it shows power and wisdom of Allah.

      Likewise if people follow advise of Allah then world would become a paradise on earth and that is how it would become known that Allah is wise and is truly glorious.

      In the verse where Allah tells us you the muslim people are witnesses to the other people, it simply means that you should be an exemplary people by looking at success of you people, others should come to realise glory of Allah.

      alAAalameen is plural for "Aalam" which encompasses everything in existence except Almighty Allah. The wold "Aalam" is itself a plural word, having no singular form.

      The alAAalameen are different creations that exist in the heavens and the earth, on land and at sea. Every generation of creation is called an Alam.

      Fir'awn (Pharaoh) said: And what is the Lord of the alAAalameen?

      Musa a.s. (Moses) said: "The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you seek to be convinced with certainty." [26:23:24]

      Regarding ayah:
      Alham-du-lil-lahay Rab-bil-Alameen.

      I am giving my understanding of the ayah, but since this ayah can only be explained by going through surah fatiha, i would go through surah Fatiha in least words (according to my understanding and beliefs):

      ‘Hamd’ of Allah is important part of worship. Amongst various ‘hamd-o-Sana’ of Allah, the phrase ‘Rab-bil-Alameen’ is one the most important, as it tells about Allah being Rab of all worlds.

      Surah Fatiha is a dua, where human ask guidance from Allah. Phrase of ‘hamd’ in surah Fatiha is followed with dua from us that Allah guides us on true path, carries a message of method regarding dua too. The message is regarding how one should do dua and ask from Allah, as that is how Allah likes people asking him.

      Thus the method of dua that Allah likes is what Allah showed us in Surah Fatiha, and that is: First a person should do hamd-o-sana of Allah, then show helplessness and dependence on Allah, then ask Allah what person needs in most humble way, then admit that whatever person is asking only Allah knows of its good and bad and then again ask Allah to give whatever one asked in ways whatever Allah would think is the best.

      Actually, since we know that Allah loves Prophet (SAW), and has mentioned in Quran that he himself sends Salaam to Prophet (SAW), best way of dua is to read Darood and then do Hamd-o-Sana before asking anything from Allah with admittance that Allah is all knowing and admittance of our helplessness and dependence on Allah.


      Here is something about Surah Fatiha according to what I understand:

      In surah Fatiha: First four ayahs (including Bismillah) are ‘hamd’ of Allah ... Ayah 5 is accepting our dependence on Allah ... Ayah 6 is dua itself ... and Ayah 7 is admitting that whatever we are asking, only Allah knows the best, so whatever Allah gives should be what Allah considers the best.

      Ayah 1: In the name of Allah the most compassionate and merciful
      Ayah 2: All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
      Ayah 3: Most Compassionate and Most merciful.


      [From what I understand: Compassionate is the one who wants good for all, irrespectively ... and merciful is the one who forgives, provides and does good for all, irrespectively.

      A person is ‘Rahman’ who has Raham in his heart (is compassionate to all, irrespectively)... that is, the person thinks and feels the pain and suffering of others irrespective of who they are. Thus, Rahman is the one who is ‘compassionate’ ... yani: Jiss kay dil may Raham hay.

      A person is ‘Raheem’ who practically does Raham on others (is merciful to all, irrespective), that is, the person forgives all, help and provide the needs of others and reduces pain and suffering of others, irrespective of who they are. Thus, Raheem is the one who is ‘merciful’ ... Yani: Jo Raham kerta hay.

      Allah is Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem ... that is, Allah is not only Rahman and Raheem, but is the source of all such ‘feelings of Raham’ and ‘doing of Raham’].

      Ayah 4: Master of the judgment day.
      Actually, Allah the master of time is master of all days, but on judgment day he would be there to give judgments and his judgment would be ultimate judgment for all.

      Ayah 5: It is you (Allah) that we worship and it is you (Allah) from whom we seek help.
      (In this Ayah we accept and recognise our dependence on Allah in all respect).

      Ayah 6: Guide us (instruct us) to follow the straight path.
      This ayah is dua (prayer)... it is what we want from Allah by reciting Surah Fatiha. We want Allah’s guidance to follow straight path.

      Ayah 7: The path of those you blessed and bestowed favours and not on the path of those you cursed (incurred anger) and those who have gone astray.

      Ayah 7 is very important in many respects. It shows that we admit to Allah that we do not know the straight path (path of righteous that Allah likes), but with all knowledge that Allah gave us, we are still dependent on Allah that he shows the path he likes, path that only Allah knows and favours.

      When reciting surah Fatiha (ayah 7), no one says that ...guide us on ‘The path we know, we follow, we understand from Quran and hadith, the path that our books teaches us, the path that our parents taught us, the path that our guru teaches us, etc’ ... but all say that ... to guide us on ‘The path of those you blessed and bestowed favours and not on the path of those you cursed (incurred anger) and those who have gone astray’.

      This verse is slap on the face of those who follow certain Aqeedah and believe that they have to be ‘right’ while all others have to be ‘wrong’. Such belief shows that they are munafiq if they read Surah-Fatiha and understand it, as when they recite surah Fatiha, they admit that only Allah knows path he likes most, and it is he who can guide us on that path, not our knowledge, beliefs, understanding, books, parents, or guru.

      Thus, even though everyone follows what they follow believing that they are following the true path (the path Allah likes), the only one who is blessed is the one who follow believing that what they follow is right path, but along with it they also believe that in the end only Allah knows who is right and who is wrong. With such belief, they follow the Aqeedah what they are following but leaving the judgment of ‘right and wrong’ of Aqeedah on Allah.

      Since true believers know that they could not be certain of ‘right and wrong’ regarding ‘true path’, they keep their mind open all the time, so that if Allah decides to guide them on right path, they are always there to accept. Allah’s guidance comes by increasing our knowledge and analysing them unbiased using our heart and mind, as ‘heart and mind’ is the only faculty Allah gave human to analyse anything and recognize truth.

      Anyhow, a person would only be certain of the right path on judgment day, but having believes on Allah and following a path relying on Allah without judging others, they can hope for forgiveness on judgement day, as they tried their best hoping the guidance from Allah for them (who is the only guide anyhow).

      Actually, the reason of biggest fitna on this earth is the denial of Surah Fatiha’s Ayah 7. Because of that denial, people get involved in religious as well as sectarian violence, thinking that their path is the right path whereas all other paths are wrong path and need to get eliminated, without leaving that judgement on Allah. If they understood Ayah 7 of surah Fatiha, they would have known that only Allah knows the right path, the path he likes, and it is only Allah who could judge what a person is following and guide a person on his preferred path ... Not any book, beliefs, understanding, knowledge, parents, or guru. Thus, a person’s only duty is to learn and try his best with good intention, but leave everything regarding ‘following true path’ on Allah (that is what the person admits in surah fatiha anyhow)... as it is only Allah who can guide and his guidance is always from within, without we even knowing about it.

      In Luke 11:2-4 and Matthew 6:9-13 there is the Lord's Prayer - The first and second verse is:

      "Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, Your kingdom come, Your Will be done"

      It is interesting here that: To hallow is "to make holy or sacred, to sanctify or consecrate, to venerate".[1]

      Bismillah and Al-Hamd go hand in hand ... By starting in the Name of Allah we praise or venerate Him and it is interesting that the Christians have a chapter which is similar to the Fatihah ... The Rabb-i-l-'Alameen is The Lord of The Worlds - Such a picture means that The Worlds are His Kingdom - The 'Arsh ... There are also hadith that state the Heavens and the Earth and all in between are the Arsh ...Some say the Arsh includes these ...

      The modern day brings us news that there might be many universes out there - No matter - Surah Fatihah with the miraculous word "'Alameen" already encompasses any possible scenario that modern discovery will make ... "'Alameen" is such a perfect word to denote everything in it's plurality and in what can be seen and not seen, physical and metaphoric ...it is amazing.

      Word Allah in my view is proper noun even though some hold it to be contracted form of AL ILAAH=the god and yet others hold it as the moon god of ancient Arabs. ILAAH means sovereign or ruler or king. The quran is anti shirk and anti idol and anti god of any kind other than Allah therefore to link word Allah to anything other than proper noun of the supernatural being the creator of all that exists would make no sense in quranic context.

      Moreover the opposition of nonmuslims to Allah as a God would indicate that this name in the quran did not mean any idol god or any other god of any sort than what the quran explains. Even if we take it as contracted form of AL ILAAH it would still indicate quranic God not what others worshipped eg people and idols and sun and moon and trees and animals etc etc.

      Words RAHMAAN and RAHEEM both come from same root RAA, HAA and MEEM. It is used for womb or mother because womb provides all needs for an embryo just like a mother provides all need for a baby. Since Allah also provides for all needs of his creation therefore the use of these words as attributes of God. The slight difference between RAHMAAN and RAHEEM is that rahmaan is the one who provide wholesome thing in one go each time whereas as raheem is the one who provides consistently and constantly.

      Rahmaan is about graceful and dignified provision for the benefit of the provided and raheem is about blissful or plentiful provision. In the quranic context word raheem is used in sense of blissful revelation because through guidance of Allah people can attain a blissful life.

      These words also have connotations for interconnection between the whole of creation ie each and everything in the universe is somehow interconnected and interdependent. This is why people born from same womb are very much interconnection hence they are brothers and sisters etc etc. Likewise the idea denotes human brotherhood based upon compassion for each other ie a sense of caring for each other and sharing with each other.

      As for word AALAM, it is from same root as AALIM. AIN, LAAM and MEEM. It means knowledge, science, information, a unit of existence or a complete system. Since a kingdom is a complete unit within itself therefore word aalameen is used to indicate various complete systems or kingdoms eg animal kingdom, plantation kingdom, human community or animal community. Likewise knowledge or information is also divided into various fields or faculties of knowledge. Regardless whatever it all originates from one and only God.

      The two attributes of Allah in this ayah and in also their usage in Bismillah, with the translation that you chose are:

      1) Ar Rahman = entirely Merciful

      Generally Merciful in this world to all His creations, including among jins and humans, who even deny His existence and His guidance in this world. This is specific to His mercy in this world.

      2) Ar Raheem = especially Merciful

      Merciful especially and specifically to those on day of resurrection, who died on Iman. This attribute Raheem will have no part for non-muslims in life hereafer.

      Allow me to add more for better understanding.

      'Ar-Rahman 'and 'Ar-Rahim' are two names derived from 'Ar-Rahman (the mercy), but Rahman has more meanings that pertain to mercy than Ar-Rahim. There is a statement by Ibn Jarir that indicates that there is a consensus on this meaning. Further, Al-Qurtubi said, "The proof that these names are derived (From Ar-Rahman), is what at-Tirmidhi recorded - and graded Sahih from Abdur-Rahman bin Awf that he heard the Messenger of Allah said that the Almighty Allah says: "I am Ar-Rahman. I created the Raham (womb, i.e. family relations) and derived a name for it from My Name. Hence, whoever keeps it, I will keep ties to him, and whoever serves it, I will server ties with him."

      Al-Qurtubi said, "It was said that both Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim have the same meaning, such as the words "Nadman" and "Nadim", as Abu Ubayad has stated. Abu Ali Al-Farisi said Ar-Rahman which is exclusively for Allah is a name that encompasses every type of mercy that Almighty Allah has. Ar-Rahim is what effects the believers, for Almighty Allah Said in Quran 33:43.

      They are two soft names, one of them is softer than the other (meaning it carries more implications of mercy). "He is Ar-Rahman with all creation and Ar-Rahim with the believers. (see 25:59 & 20:5)

      In these verses referenced above, Almighty Allah mentioned the 'Istawa - rising over the Throne' - along with His Name Ar-Rahman, to indicate that His mercy encompasses all of His creation. Almighty Allah also said: "He is ever Rahim (merciful) to the believers, thus enompassing the believers with His Name Ar-Rahman.

      They said: This testifies to the fact that Ar-Rahman carries a broader scope of meaning pertaining to the mercy of Almighty Allah with His creation in both lives. Meanwhile, Ar-Rahim is exclusively for the believers."
